With a $570 million investment and a 200,000-unit annual capacity, this marks a strategic move to make Thailand a hub for Southeast Asian and right-hand drive markets. The initial $285 million phase targets 100,000 units yearly. Changan established its Thai entity on August 23 and inked a deal with Thailand BOI on October 17. It was the year 2019 when I first landed in #Shandong, China's middle-income province. Every second car there was either a Volkswagen or some other European brand; very few Japanese brands were on the road. And I came to know from my dear Chinese friends that they do not like to use #Japanese brands. Fast forward to 2022: I arrived in #shenzhen , a megacity in the south of China; very few Volkswagens and a lot of Toyota, Honda, & BMWs. And since the start of 2023, there have been lots and lots of BYD cars too. And just few days ago, i saw in a DIGITIMES Asia article that Volkswagen has crossed BYD in sales And surprisingly, Honda & Toyota unit sales have jumped by 102% & 35%, respectively. From these figures, it looks like Japanese brands are making their way into the Chinese market.
