In case you missed it, yesterday (4th of June) was the inaugural World Day for Assistive Technology, which is all about unlocking opportunities that are not possible without AT. But the outcomes we can achieve with AT are dependent on the quality of the prescription process. All steps are essential, but I wanted to highlight an important one in this post. With NDIS AT applications often taking 6 months to be processed at the moment, it can be easy to forget that the process doesn’t end when you submit the application. You need to do appropriate follow-up once the AT is provided, otherwise… The person is at risk of abandoning AT, when all that’s needed is some individualised adjustments or education on how to use it. You also won’t know whether you’ve actually solved the functional difficulty the person was having or not, until you give the new AT a test run. And you won’t know if you’ve done a good job, or learn what you might need to do differently next time, unless you can see those outcomes yourself. So next time you submit an NDIS AT application, put a reminder in your calendar for a month’s time to check on the progress of the application. And let’s face it, realistically, set it to repeat monthly for the next six months, and hopefully by then you’ll know the outcome and can do the follow-up. "Hey guys, it's lunch break!" - session participants of AO Trauma Deutschland's courses at Universitätsklinikum Düsseldorf and Universitätsklinikum Freiburg being immersed in our simulation software platform for testing fracture treatment scenarios. The #virtual case discussion supplements the theory blocks and hands-on workshops. Our lessons learned: 👩🔬 The evaluation showed that #simulation helps participants in understanding the concept of stability in #bonehealing. 🖱 Moving beyond a classic linear presentation format, we need to work on #usability to make the life of the instructors easier. 🍳 Boil the content down: simulation offers a plethora of customizing options. In order to make the teaching blocks more straight forward, we are going to work on more pre-selected scenarios with the instructors. A big thank you to all the course participants, instructors and support staff!
