Reference for tower crane selection Under normal circumstances, the range of tower cranes is determined only by the lifting capacity and range of the tower crane. Professional technicians responsible for construction machinery should recommend economically reasonable and scientifically optimized products when selecting. First, decide what type of lifting machinery to choose based on factors such as the height, width, length and construction site of the building. There are two main considerations: (1) Consider the maximum weight of the finished components of the project under construction and the maximum lifting capacity of the tower crane. (2) Consider the range of tower cranes based on the height, floor area and building appearance of the project under construction. In this way, tower cranes can meet special requirements and reduce costs. Generally, fixed tower cranes below 400KN•M are used for single residential buildings; tower cranes above 400KN•M are used for high-rise buildings; tower cranes above 800KN•M or internal climbing tower cranes are used for super high-rise buildings. Scope of Work Road & Rail Services was tasked by Mosaic and CSX in New Wales Florida, with replacing two sections of track, totaling 11,615 track feet, used to clean empty railcars. The track was in extremely bad shape, with years of product buildup covering the ties, significantly increasing dwell time and the associated costs. Project Challenges The project involved track removal and replacement, with two switches designed, built and cut in at each end. Work was scheduled during peak production for Mosaic, in a very tight time frame, and was performed in two phases to minimize impact to the plant’s production. The Bone Valley area where New Wales is situated is extremely hot. The track lies between a large gypsum stack and a retention pond, and over a central flume where piping comes downhill and runs below the track. Storms are common, and work was halted whenever a lightning strike occurred within seven miles or when winds reached 25 miles per hour or more.  As many as five contractors also had to be managed over the course of the project, and compliance with stringent Mosaic safety protocols and Road & Rail Service’s own safety procedures had to be ensured. Project Process With a team of 12 – 15 employees and a significant amount of equipment, the removal of existing ties and more than 11,000 track feet of old rail was followed by excavation of 7” - 14” of track bed, and the demolition and removal of a building on the site, including removal of all electrical. With the old track removed and excavation complete, the Road & Rail Services team laid in 12” of sub-ballast, followed by 4” lifts that were rolled, compacted and tested. New ties were placed and new, all welded track was laid. The new switches were cut in during a very tight 36-hour window; rotating crews worked at night to cut in #8 switches consisting of 125 feet of track, laying an additional 325 feet of track for each switch. Project Result With a detailed plan of work prepared in advance and a seasoned track crew onsite, Phase I was safely completed on time with Phase II ahead of schedule. The result? A significant reduction in dwell time for Mosaic and CSX railcars at the Mosaic site. CSX is now able to set out trains on these two tracks, which typically accommodate 80 railcars a day, six days a week. Pt 4.0IS The question of whether the employer would claim the costs of demolition and reconstructing from the contractor whose work was defective is deliberated in cases stated as follows: The Board of Governors of the Hospital for Sick Children and Another vs McLaughlin and Harvey (1987), often known as the Great Ormond Street case, followed by several other cases such as McGlinn vs.Waltham Contractors Ltd and Others (2007) and Linklaters Business Services vs. Robert McAlpine (2010). In these cases, court in arriving at a decision concerning whether damages for breach of contract resulting in defective work should be subject to repair or replacement , had to elect the most reasonable remedy in the circumstances based upon the evidence available and also would in all probability take into account the advice provided by an expert. Nevertheless, in the case of Adcock's Trustees vs.Bridge R.D.C. (1911) 75 JP 241,the contractor comply with all the specification of the contract required all bricks used to be sound , well burnt, free from lime or impurities or other defects and the whole work was to be done in a thorough workmanlike manner. The Architect instructed the underground manhole to be constructed from bricks. Bricks were used, but owing to underground water and nature of bricks, the manhole was not water tight and were condemned by the Engineer. It was held that as the bricks conformed with the specification, no complaint could be made against the contractor who was entitled to be paid for his work. The House of Lords concludes that the employer will be eligible for the cost of rectification if work executed by the contractor is defective. However, if rectification was not a rational solution, due to high costs compared with minimal benefit, rectification costs would not be awarded.
