Have you heard of the Bonus Army? In 1924, the U.S. government promised war veterans a bonus for their service in the first World War. The catch, however, was that they could not cash them for nearly two decades. As The Great Depression hit the country, a number of unemployed World War I veterans organized in May 1932 to march in Washington, D.C. By June, thousands of veterans had set up camp in Washington within view of the Capitol. By July 28, 1932, the local police were ordered to remove the protesters. When police arrived to move them out, a riot erupted and police shot and killed two men. The Army—led by Gen. Douglas MacArthur—was called in to forcibly evict the Bonus Army from their makeshift camps. The camps were driven off with tanks and tear gas. On this day in 1953, the Korean War ended with an armistice. This war is often times referred to as the “Forgotten War” because it was overshadowed by both World War II and Vietnam, which had greater impact on global politics and American society as a whole. DAV wants to shine a light on all Korean War veterans and remind them that they are not forgotten, but appreciated for their bravery.

President Truman took a significant step toward improving race relations in the United States on July 26, 1948, when he signed Executive Order 9981. This order called for the desegregation of the U.S. Armed Forces. This decision faced strong opposition and its full impact was not felt until the end of the Korean War. Although the Army had already desegregated earlier, it wasn't until 1954 that the last segregated units were disbanded.

Marine veteran Sam Johnson’s first job after leaving active duty was as a project manager for Duke Energy in North Carolina, a job he landed through a DAV job fair. Johnson said Duke Energy was the perfect landing spot post-service and ultimately opened doors to a fulfilling life as an entrepreneur. #NationalHireAVeteranDay
