🥳 We were delighted to welcome so many authors, friends and Brill colleagues to our editorial summer party yesterday to celebrate 300 years of Kant! After a warm welcome by Carsten Buhr, Manuela Gerlof and Maurits van den Boogert, guests were able to chat with our editors, browse beautiful book displays, and join a guided tour of our building. Philosopher Lea Ypi from The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) gave a keynote lecture titled "Kant on Revolution," followed by a Q&A with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and DIE ZEIT journalist Katharina Teutsch. A new Kant museum in Lüneburg was the subject of curator Tim Kunze's presentation, and Kant-themed merch was raffled off, too. Throw in a fantastic buffet, gelato and drinks, plus some sugary pop tunes, and we had all the ingredients for a perfect summer day! 🗣We are pleased to share that the Special Issue of Sage’s Memory Studies Journal: “Taking Stock of Memory Studies”, with the MSA’s Founding Presidents as Guest Editors: Jeffrey Olick, Aline Sierp, and Jenny Wustenberg, is out! 💡The special issue is composed of 14 articles that nonetheless each stand on their own. The editors have grouped “them into those that seek to open new geographical and cultural horizons in memory studies, those that seek to open, expand, combine, or, occasionally, critique, existent disciplinary perspectives, and those that seek to develop a new sensitivity to ecological transformations and have engendered new perspectives on temporality” (Olick, Sierp, Wüstenberg, 2023). 📄The keyword of the issue is “openness, though an openness of a particular kind: not one that seeks to unify by washing out irreconcilable differences of experience and perspective, but one that embraces these differences head on” (Ibid). ❓Interested? A useful book which provides a nice overview of the field, is my opinion as one of the editors. It was the first in the series of science communication.

This photo in the very last day of the Lorentz Conference "The road to FAIR and Equitable Science" was taken in Het Pesthuis ("the plague house"), a building constructed in the 17th century to hold those afflicted by the plague. The building ended up never being used for that purpose - when it was ready, the plague was fortunately over. Thanks to the leadership of Barend Mons PhD., this building will host a new project/institute/vision to contribute to the future of science as an open, collaborative, global and ethical human enterprise. Paraphrasing the Rector Magnificus of the university of Leiden, the honorable Hester Bijl: let Het Pesthuis in the 21th century be a beacon in the flight against an epidemic of technological dogmatism, ignorance and disinformation. We, the Semantics, Cybersecurity, and Services (SCS)/University of Twente, stand strongly behind this new vision of a Leiden Institute for FAIR and Equitable Science (LIFES) as a founding member in the very first-hour. Just like Rotten Tomatoes was built to provide more context about movies, Scite was built to do the same for scholarly literature. Recently, I had the opportunity to listen to Neil Lee discuss his new book, "Innovation for the Masses," at the Friday Freeman Seminar hosted by SPRU-Science Policy Research Unit. His insights into inclusive innovation policy captured my attention. In my book review of "Innovation for the Masses: How to Share Benefits of the High-Tech Economy," for Regional Science Policy and Practice, co-authored with Insha Latief, I reflect on the compelling ideas presented in his work.
