Yesterday my brother, Seth shipped out to boot camp for the Marines. I couldn't be prouder of the man he's become and can't wait to see what God does through him. Throughout this process of waiting for him to leave, soaking up all the moments, saying goodbye and then having him gone, I couldn't help but be inspired by his passion, excited and determination. I think it goes without saying that joining the marines is a HUGE challenge. Although an extremely intimidating task, Seth has only focused on his excitement to join and about the growth he will have through the challenge. Yes, there will be many many challenging, painful experiences he goes through at bootcamp and beyond, but he only ever looks at it through a positive perspective. As I sit in my office thinking about this, I wonder how things could change if we all faced challenges this way. I know we aren't all going into the marines, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't face each work day with the same tenacity, positivity and excitement to go through even the least desirable parts of our day. This is because at the end of the day, the pains we feel on the day to day are growing pains. What is challenging can ultimately lead to the best opportunities or success, and having a positive outlook on it can change everything. So how will you approach your challenges today? We may not be able to change what happens to us, or what obstacles we face, but we can absolutely change our approach to it. Go out there and have a great day everyone!:)

In 2015, while deployed on Operation Okra, I was surprised to had received a commanders commendation. By 2020, and 3 years on ‘Civvie street’ - I was awarded, 'Young WHS Leader of the Year' at the Hunter Safety Awards (awarded in 2021). I'm definitely not here to say I've cracked the code of life, but there's been a clear pattern that I’ve picked up on: success in career transition leaves hints, markers, and clues. But here's an insight you wouldn’t know: I got that WHS award for a job that I had been made redundant for just a week prior to COVID hitting. Whilst achievements have their spotlight, behind them are often challenges, struggles, and long nights that most don’t see. It's those harder moments, and the lessons learned, that I'm keen to share with fellow veterans navigating similar paths. It's been a number of years now since I transitioned from the Air Force, and I've since ventured into a career in Safety and Human Factors. That switch? It wasn’t a simple one, but every challenge, every win, and every setback has been a stepping stone. I must admit, I owe a lot to the unwavering support from my family, friends, and mentors over the years. This journey has never been just a one-person show. Transitioning to a new job or industry isn’t merely about changing careers, but about evolving, adapting, and leaning on the collective strength of those around you. For those in the midst of their own career transition, know this: It requires planning (including contingency), patience, and dedication to continuous improvement. The road won't always be easy, but it's our experiences, intestinal fortitude, and support that can make all the difference. Stay the course and keep pushing forward. #veteranshelpingveterans

💡CADRE COLUMN 💡 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗲. As an Airman serving at THE Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy, this role allows me plenty of opportunities to meet students, have great conversations and learn a little bit about people. During some of these conversations, it has been a little surprising and somewhat alarming in the number of times I’ve engaged with folks who have concerns with policies, procedures, or guidance, relatable things. However, there is more to this point, the most concerning aspect during these conversations, is it usually starts with “I”. When did “I” become who WE are? As Airmen, we always value the relationships, engagements, and events we get to be a part of because of one thing, the TEAM! The TEAM is what we are about. The TEAM is what motivates us each day. The TEAM is why I continue to serve. In the last few years, we have slowly faded away from a TEAM dynamic and gravitated to individualism. As SNCOs, we must commit to the fact that individualism must die. We must eradicate it from our force, units, and flights. We should all look to our left and right, even up and down the chain and do what is needed each day for the TEAM. You do not always have to be a TEAM leader…more importantly, be a solid TEAM player. The most fun people have in their careers is when they reflect on a good TEAM, not their individual achievements and accomplishments, but the deeply rooted relationships that were built while being a part of a successful TEAM! To prepare our airmen for Mission Generation Force Elements, each service’s individuality is important to the Joint Force but that’s where the individuality should end. Bottom line, we have airmen with diverse thoughts, capabilities, and air force specialty codes, we can have the most organized, trained, and equipped airmen in the world, but ultimately, we will have mission failure if we are not a TEAM. -CMSgt Rich Brownlee Chief of Operations, AFSNCOA

It was no coincidence that Ayrissa Schmidt, Anna Vargas, and Sam Bascom presided over my going away festivities when I relinquished command of USS PINCKNEY (DDG 91) in December 2020. These three outstanding young leaders “fleeted up” onboard the ship, meaning they completed both their junior officer tours on the same ship. Everyone onboard benefited from their energy, professionalism, and devotion to mission – especially me, the Captain!  Talent Management comes in many forms – in this case it was “hiring” from within. Organizations are strengthened when there is an internal path for growth and retention. At the same time, it’s important that healthy, achievable paths exist for “outsiders” to join the team and provide diversity in thought and perspective. In other words, I think we need to have our cake and eat it too! Growing up with the “old school” mentality in the Air Force I always rolled my eyes at uniform changes that I felt were driven by “morale”. Morale friday shirts, unit baseball caps and now duty identifier badges to just name a few. I was molded by the old timers that said morale shouldnt be based on what you wear or from a patch on your uniform. But since I commissioned my perspective has undergone a complete 180-degree transformation. Unit and or duty identifier badges give folks an identity and pride in their job and unit. Working in Financial Management, morale is always a key concern in retaining my best and brightest airman. It’s no secret that FM is not the most popular career field on social media. By showcasing these patches during their day-to-day duties, they also experience a profound sense of camaraderie and esprit de corps. With recruiting challenges we’re facing today, it is increasingly crucial for leaders to identify opportunities to enhance morale and a patch or morale shirt is an easy enhancement So I finally joined the club today to show my own pride. 😎

5 Years at Delta Air Lines!   Who knew that five years ago when I accepted this job, it would be the adventure of a lifetime. And little did I know that it would end up giving me so much more than just the next chapter in my career. It's given me friendships and family, memories, challenges, and experiences that I couldn’t have dreamed of. These past five years have continued to shape my leadership and have deepened my commitment to excellence.  Most importantly, I couldn’t have done it without the most amazing team and coworkers- they continue to change how I see the world every day!   If I am confident about anything, it’s that NO ONE Better Connects The World than Delta.
