It is truly commendable to witness Mitie's recent inclusion as a member of the 5% Club, which reflects the company's unwavering commitment to fostering apprenticeship programs. Apprenticeships hold a special place in my heart, considering my own journey as a former apprentice.
My professional journey commenced at Rolls Royce in Bristol, where I embarked on an apprenticeship with the goal of becoming a maintenance electrician. This experience not only provided me with invaluable work exposure from the age of 16 but also afforded me the opportunity to achieve the status of a qualified electrician while pursuing ONC and HNC qualifications in Process Plant and Control. These qualifications have undeniably positioned me for future career advancement, whether in the role of an electrician, in sales, or even business unit management.
I recognise that there was a period during which apprenticeships were overshadowed by the allure of university-based higher education, and there is certainly nothing wrong with pursuing a university education. However, the current approach, which allows school leavers and more mature students/employees to opt for apprenticeships across a wide spectrum of subjects, has expanded the horizons and possibilities available to a broader range of individuals.
My own apprenticeship provided me with several advantages, including the ability to earn a livelihood while gaining essential knowledge and skills, which have proven invaluable throughout my career. It also granted me insights into an industry that has evolved into the multifaceted field of Facilities Management (FM). Furthermore, it fostered my personal growth and development.
It's crucial to emphasise that the journey of learning need not conclude upon the completion of an apprenticeship. If your professional or personal aspirations drive you towards further education, the path remains open, whether through distance learning or at a university.
In my belief, apprenticeships serve as an exemplary stepping stone and catalyst for any career. Why not give it a go?
