I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many aspiring engineers this year at various events such as the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the Paris Airshow, and EAA Airventure Oshkosh. The most common question I’m asked: what advice do you have for somebody trying to break into the engineering workforce? As I reflect on my personal experiences as an engineer, as well as the shifting expectations in this field, there are five helpful tips that I try to share with each young professional I meet: 1. Build a Strong Foundation: When considering your education, remember that a solid engineering degree with a foundation in physics and science is necessary to succeed in almost any engineering field. For example, even if you don't directly use Calculus in your everyday work, the underlying principles are valuable in optimizing systems. These fundamental skills will help you think critically and develop good judgment. 2. Welcome New Learnings: Be open to learning new concepts and skills even outside your core discipline. As I transitioned from a mechanical engineering focus to electrical concepts and software development, the logical thinking skills I acquired in school helped me adapt. You never know where those learnings will come in handy, and they might even help you make a pivot in your career path. 3. Take Advantage of Real-World Experiences: If you're still in high school or college, internships and co-op assignments are invaluable. They provide real-world experience and help you discover what you like and dislike. They also help companies get to know you, potentially leading to job opportunities after graduation. 4. Get Involved: Join clubs and organizations that align with your interests. Participating in design and build projects can teach you teamwork and provide hands-on experience. 5. Follow Your Passion: Find what truly excites you. Whether it's cars, airplanes, or any other field, passion shines through in interviews and job performance. Employers appreciate candidates who genuinely love what they do. If you’re breaking into the engineering industry, remember that you don’t have to be an expert straight out of school. There is always room to grow in this field. It's about having a strong foundation, being open to learning, gaining practical experience and following your passion. Thrilled to reflect on an #enriching journey as I concluded my #summerinternship with Micron Technology two weeks back! As an IE Planning intern in MSBIE, I delved into a #dynamic learning experience that broadened my horizons and deepened my #industry insights. The internship offered me the privilege of firsthand experience in the #semiconductorindustry , immersing me in the intricacies of IE Planning. I honed my skills in performing time study simulations and constructed a comprehensive model for calculating the Effective Processing Time (EPT) of an equipment and eventually building a calculator to get an estimate of the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). The highlight was deploying this model on two #workstations , contributing directly in estimating equipment capacity . A significant part of my internship involved intense #literaturereview and crafting a reference #documentation from scratch, elucidating the concepts of OEE and EPT for #capacity modelling. This comprehensive documentation in both written and presentation formats now stands as a valuable #resource for my team. The #opportunity extended beyond work tasks; I had the chance to #connect with #inspiring individuals within the company, expanding my #professionalnetwork . Engaging in #teambuilding initiatives and participating in a comprehensive FAB Tour, I gained insights into Micron's #fastpaced #workculture and its holistic production line. I extend my heartfelt #gratitude to the entire team for embracing me warmly and providing #guidanceandsupport whenever needed. A special note of thanks to my supervisors, Mr. Taufan Rusli and Mr. Maria Ignatius Joseph . Their #mentorship significantly accelerated my learning curve, enabling me to surpass my own expectations and achieve my #goals .
