CONSTRUCTION STARTS ON HE DREIHT OFFSHORE WIND MEGA-PROJECT Construction is underway on one of Germany's largest offshore wind farms - the 960 MW He Dreiht project in the North Sea. Developer EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG has begun installing the first of hundreds of monumental monopile foundations for the €2.4 billion wind farm. The Thialf floating crane recently positioned the first 70-metre long, 1,350-ton steel monopile foundations on the seabed 85 km off the island of Borkum. At peak times, over 500 workers and 60 ships will be involved in construction. He Dreiht will use 15 MW Vestas turbines, with the components currently being manufactured in parallel. The turbines and array cables will be installed in early 2025, allowing the full wind farm to enter operation late next year. The 'CPP' of overall offshore wind farms architecture?

💡To date, the assembly of wind turbine generators (WTG) onto floating offshore substructures has taken place at the quayside, before being towed to the offshore farm site. However, as the industry moves towards commercialisation using larger turbines installed in deeper waters, this method may not be suitable or cost-effective for larger commercial projects due to factors such as weather restrictions for tow-outs, quayside capacity and length, harbour water depth restrictions and onshore crane capacity at the port.  The Stick Building Wind Turbine Generators On-Site (SBOS) project, built upon previous projects to further identify and assess innovative methods and technologies to assemble WTG at the wind farm site.  1. Assess and evaluate different innovations and enabling technologies that permit WTG assembly at floating offshore wind farm sites;  2. Outline and define the operational procedures for stick-building on site;  3. Determine the limitations for on-site assembly and identify potential major showstoppers;  4. Analyse and compare the workability of various installation methodologies.   The SBOS project was delivered by Heerema Engineering Solutions under the Carbon Trust’s Floating Wind JIP. 👀 Read more in the full report https://lnkd.in/eVaV52TB #OffshoreWindEnergy #Renewables #FloatingWind #Innovation

Onshore wind is a proven and mature technology with an extensive global supply chain.  It has evolved over the past years to maximize the amount of electricity generated per megawatt of installed capacity, unlocking more locations with lower wind speeds. Wind turbines are getting bigger, with higher hub heights and larger rotor diameters. Offshore wind power is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years as turbines are deployed offshore to harness stronger winds.
