MEET THE TEAM #5  We're entering a team into this year's UK Challenge raising money for www.beefysfoundation.org As they are in the midst of some intensive training 😉 let's shine a light on them and celebrate their dedication and commitment to winning. Today's team member is Chris Luckham OBE, we asked him a few questions so you can get to know a bit about him... 1. Why did you decide to do the UK Challenge?  This is my 4th UK challenge, it is there perfect way to test oneself and develop skills in some fantastic settings, a good friend and business partner arranged this year’s entry under the name of our new venture Crowd Angel - creating a world where we can gather safely. 2. What are you looking to get. out of it?  As a team we discussed this and we have a target in mind for our team (now consigned to a sealed envelope), but perhaps most importantly as an individual after a long military career it is proving to myself that I can still deal with uncertainty, be that physical, intellectual or strategic in nature. 3. Which bits excite and scare you the most?  The team excite me the most, it is perhaps the most diverse in terms of capabilities and hence potentially the strongest I have been involved with! Never one to admit things scare me, but I am driven on to ensure I don’t let the team down by failing to achieve our goal (to be revealed later)! 4. What training are you doing for the event? I hope that a bit of sea swimming and some running will get me through; however, I did pass someone on a run the other day only to be heckled that my dog alongside me was only walking!!  5. What other 'challenge' do you like doing in your spare time? Over the past few decades I have been to some hostile environments, built a house, climbed Mont Blanc (from the Italian side!), Skied on the Nile and worked with some incredible people (this year's team included)! The 2024 individual challenge was beat my wife on cross country skis (lets hope that is the only unachived goal!). I was reflecting today on two incredible stories that exemplify resilience, determination, and triumph against all odds. Take the London Marathon, for instance, a testament to the indomitable spirit within us all. This year, two remarkable individuals inspired me with their awe-inspiring journey. Allison Proctor has overcome huge challenges in her own life but ran the distance for #MarieCurieUK in memory of her mum who lost her battle with cancer. James Walker ran the marathon for #AlzheimersResearchUK. James described the run as "hard" – I have edited this! Despite facing their own unique adversities, they embarked on the daunting challenge of running the iconic 26.2 miles through the streets of London. Their stories of perseverance serve as a beacon of inspiration for us all. One individual battled through physical injury, defying limitations and pushing boundaries to cross the finish line. Their unwavering resolve in the face of adversity is a true testament to the strength of the human spirit. The other person, overcoming personal hardships and setbacks, found solace and strength in every stride. With each step, they not only conquered the marathon course but also conquered their own doubts and fears. Their success is a reminder that no obstacle is insurmountable and that with resilience and determination, we can achieve the extraordinary. I have been in London on 3 occasssions to watch my daughter and son in law run. Each time I have been overawed at the sheer bloody minded determination that people apply to complete 26.2 miles. Last week I finally got to tick a big challenge off my bucket list with an old pal of mine, Will Manners. We completed The National 3 Peaks Challenge, with a little twist thrown in for good measure; instead of driving the 450 miles between the Peaks, we cycled, in 63hrs! The simple answer is that they give me focus; fitness, good nutrition, a proper sleep regime, the opportunity to raise funds for a good cause, and most importantly, an excellent work-life balance. All the above is essential when running your own business from a home office. It keeps me sane, gives me purpose, and makes sure my body and mind are in the best shape possible to cope with anything life throws at me. 14 years ago I was struggling... I was 17.5 stone, didn't do any exercise, had an awful diet, drank too much, suffered badly from insomnia, and worked stupidly long hours. As a result, my business was suffering, my health wasn't good and I was a strong candidate for a Heart Attack or Stroke. I'm not perfect now, by any stretch, but I do have purpose and focus that keep my compass true. If you're wondering how to break out of a rut and need focus, I'm always happy to have a chat! Today's team member is Colin McClean, we asked him a few questions so you can get to know a bit about him... 1. Why did you decide to do the UK Challenge? I fell for the old trick from a mate (thanks John....) that goes something like "It will be great fun and you you don't need to do any training......." And in addition I am now closer to 60 to 50 and am determined to "keep the old man out". So always looking for new things to keep me young, test me and keep me in the mindset that "everyday is a school day." 2. What are you looking to get. out of it? A test, some (good, hopefully....) memories, some new friends and inspiration to keep pushing, keep learning, keep living 3. Which bits excite and scare you the most? On the assumption that noone is trying to kill me, the only thing that I allow to scare me is the fear of letting the team down. And John's sense of humour......... I also suspect I will be reminded how little I actually know which is both scary and exciting as it motivates to keep going. Exciting just to be doing stuff I have never done before: it is good not to just do the same thing! 4. What training are you doing for the event? I am just trying to return to fitness anyway, so this helps create an allround base. I also have the chance of a lifetime to trek in Nepal for 3 weeks, so I will count that as my high altitude training camp. 5. What other 'challenge' do you like doing in your spare time? I think the truth is that I have of late allowed life to be too "same old, same old". My family built a house in 2012 and that was a real challenge out of the comfort zone. Maybe during Team Challenge we can share our thoughts on the great challenges that are out there and then start getting after them And i still need to climb Mont Blanc.......... I've been here before, but it feels even more daunting than ever. Getting to climb Everest in 2014 required raising over £30,000 in corporate sponsorship to make the goal a reality. I was 17, still doing my A-levels (or trying) and working part time in a kitchen at weekends. My parents said this was a lot of money for a 'holiday'. Raising this much seemed almost impossible. Many told me the same. But there was one thing I could control: my effort level. I was fully committed to the process - sending emails until midnight each day to potential sponsors. It meant missing family holidays, social events, and very nearly my A-levels. Although, I think sitting in a boardroom negotiating a sponsorship deal taught me more than a General Studies exam... I'd stopped calling people as I thought nobody would take me seriously with a stammer. So, I sent thousands of emails instead. Each day I would have a target of prospects. I was trying to get to rejection as quickly as possible. As my friend Anthony Taylor said recently, it takes "2000 'no' to make a business". It would only take one 'yes' to make this a reality. And I'm forever grateful to all those who put their trust in me! Now I'm at it again - this time for #Project500, our campaign to raise £500k for Mind Over Mountains to enable better mental health through nature, by June 2025. Hopefully the process will work once again, and I'll be sharing a keynote next year about exactly how we did it! Not your typical LinkedIn read, yet a story I believe holds the power to inspire. Just yesterday, I completed the Berlin Marathon – a challenging 26.2-mile journey filled with exhilaration, unwavering determination, and a myriad of profound life lessons. Every once in a while, life offers an opportunity so profound that it reshapes your perspective, tests your limits, and leaves an indelible mark on your soul. For me, that opportunity was the Berlin Marathon 2023, one of the revered Abbott World Marathon Majors. It was a journey that taught me invaluable lessons, not just about running but about life itself. Running the Berlin Marathon wasn't just about personal achievement. It was an opportunity to support a cause – Save the Children UK. Every stride I took was fueled by the desire to make a difference in the lives of children worldwide. What started as a promising Saturday for our charity golf outing turned into an unexpected challenge when my sister (Elizabeth Nottling) and I got the call at 6:30am that the course was flooded from the rain the night before. But, in just a couple of hours, we were able to pivot and turn the day into a fantastic indoor trivia event with a full meal, raffle, and silent auction! The transition wasn't easy, but it was a powerful reminder of the importance of adaptability and resilience in the face of adversity. Instead of getting frustrated with the weather, we focused on making the most of the situation. By coming together and thinking creatively, we were able to ensure the success of the event and continue supporting our cause. The majority of registered golfers still attended the event and all had a great time with our impromptu trivia challenge. This experience serves as a valuable lesson for all aspects of life and work: when faced with unexpected obstacles, don't get mad or give up. Find a way to make it work, look forward, and take action. The ability to adapt and persevere can turn any challenge into an opportunity for success. A huge thank you to everyone who participated and supported us! Your enthusiasm and flexibility made this event a memorable one.
