America’s highest idea and greatest accomplishments have arisen from the spirit of innovation, cooperation, co-existence, and constant evolution. On July 4, 1776, a group of revolutionaries, imperfect men, fallible man, but visionary men, started this country out on a journey from an imperfect union to, as was later written in the U.S. Constitution, “a more perfect union.” As all co-founders, co-workers, and joint venturers can attest: any effort to build something that did not previously exist, that involves the efforts of more than one person to build, it will involve ups and downs, struggles, setbacks, strife, dissent, conflict- but also triumphs, innovations, unity, and success if there is also perseverance. Building America has been no different. Over 248 later, Americans have persevered. Americans have moved together toward that more perfect union that is a primary founding purpose of this American effort. All of us have played a role in moving this country forward towards it. We are all responsible for continuing to hone our country to perfection. This is what we celebrate on July 4th. The efforts of the founding fathers. But also, the trials, tribulations, successes, perseverance, and contributions of our ancestors in getting this nation to its point today, closer still to that more perfect union.

Happy 4th of July! As we celebrate the birth of our great nation and the freedoms we hold dear, let's reflect on the ideals that the United States of America was created to embody. The freedom to choose one’s own path and destiny, to dream, innovate, and build; the idea that no matter who you are, or where you are from, you have the right to dream, act on those dreams and achieve your dreams. It is not a guaranty of success, but a guaranty of opportunity, the opportunity to apply yourself, work hard and live a better life. Our forefathers came to America from other parts of the world to create and live a different life; not be told they had to believe certain beliefs or live a particular lifestyle. The idea that we treat everyone fairly and with the same rights they enjoyed. They fought for this independence, the right to dream and choose to believe, the right to work hard, take risks, overcome challenges, and realize their visions. America is about many different backgrounds, traditions, ways of thought and belief. It is about honoring and respecting the rights of others, even when we don’t agree with what they think. We can and should, disagree; find the middle ground, compromise. It is this principal of acceptance, compromise and working together that have taken our country from its humble beginnings as colonies, to the forefront of the world and place that people continue to want to migrate to and partake in the “Great American Experiment”. This idea is not an end, as much as it is a journey – a journey of evolution, experiment and collective achievement. Here's to freedom, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of our dreams. Happy Independence Day! #UnitedStatesofAmerica #USA #togetherweachieve #IndependenceDay #4thofJuly

“When you're working in government, theory is like another planet, but it is good to have the experience from both sides because they speak to each other. If you know the theory, you see the bigger picture and make better policy decisions. When you're teaching, having seen something in action helps you open the black box and understand what drove the policymaking decisions.” Meet Dr. Robin Brooks, incoming State Department Fellow. Brooks is a foreign service officer with the United States Department of State and most recently served as Special Advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris for Europe, Russia, Multilateral Affairs, and Democracy. Learn more about how theory and practice work in tandem in her global career:

2024 celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Council of Europe and its fundamentally important role in promoting democracy, human rights and the rule of law across our continent. As a new millennium dawned, I took part in a brilliant Council of Europe event in Oldenburg, exploring the deveopment of democratic institutions within the culture and sport context in eastern and Central Europe, for states exploring accession to the European Union. I am sure I learned a lot more from those determined to build a future based upon human rights, freedom, democracy and integrated European governance than I managed to contribute! Subsequently the Framework for Sport in England some 20 years ago was built upon the foundations created by the Council of Europe definition of sport and physical activity, and informed by insight from many places across Europe. The Council of Europe Charter for Local Self Government creates the framework and aspiration for devolution on the journey towards legal, financial and constitutional independence for democratic local government. The promotion of democracy, human rights and the rule of law remain as fundamental today as they were 75 years ago. They create the foundational design principles for public policy designed to build a future of peace, justice and wellbeing for all. It’s worth celebrating and it should be a call to action for renewal now and over the next 75 years.
