Inclusivity Task Force, Assemble! 🦸 Inclusivity rocks. But that doesn't mean it's easy to pull off an event that hits your budget requirements, navigates tricky logistics, AND makes everyone feel included. Unless, of course, you're an event organizing legend (which you are). But even heroes need a helping hand from time to time, so here are a few of my favorite inclusivity tips (from over 13 years of building awesome experiences). https://lnkd.in/daHHNeah #inclusive #diversity #teambuilding

This Loneliness Awareness Week- created and hosted by the Marmalade Trust- I want to talk about the loneliness faced by disabled people, particularly in the workplace. Statistics from the British Red Cross' Loneliness at Work Report 2023 paint a concerning picture... While roughly 10-11% of workers generally feel lonely at work, that number jumps significantly to 24% for disabled employees and those with chronic health conditions. It's a stark contrast, and it highlights the need for more inclusive work environments, as well as the importance of breaking down barriers that can lead to social isolation for disabled people! So whilst I absolutely love this year's theme for Loneliness Awareness Week, Random Acts of Connection, let's talk about some intentional acts of connection today! Accessible team building events. A great way to combat loneliness in the workplace for disabled people, and foster a sense of belonging and connection for everyone! Team building is essential for improved collaboration, communication and a positive work environment, but how many of your disabled employees are missing the opportunity to connect with their co-workers due to inaccessibility? In a world where disabled people are excluded from most things or treated as an afterthought, will you be different? Accessible team building is about creating opportunities for everyone to participate and connect, strengthening your team as a whole. When everyone feels included, they're more likely to be invested in their work and colleagues. Stronger teams lead to people feeling more comfortable with each other, which then leads to diverse perspectives, in turn, leading to richer problem-solving and new ideas! If you’re not sure where to start with creating accessible team events, have a read of my blog for tips and ideas on making yours truly inclusive: https://lnkd.in/eTC3jT5S #LonelinessAwarenessWeek #LonelinessAtWork #AccessibleTeamEvents

Professional People-Person | Proven HR Professional & Certified Life Coach | Helping You Reach Your Goals is What I Do!
Today, I feel compelled to share thoughts that go beyond my usual posts... Recent events have stirred deep reflection on where we stand as a nation and as individuals. While I'm an HR professional and aspiring Life Coach, I’m also just a human being, citizen, and neighbor. I believe in using my platform for social good. The shocking event that occured this weekend highlights the heightened tensions we are facing in the US, and the damage that can be done by malice. As people come to work on Monday, we wonder how the situation will be discussed. Will differing opinions lead to hostility, or can we engage in civil discourse? This is a critical moment for HR and business leaders to set the right tone. This moment underscores our divisions but also offers an opportunity to course correct—as individuals, workplaces, and as a nation. Whether you're a leader or an individual contributor, shaping a safe and respectful environment is our collective responsibility. And outside of work, we all have an equal responsibility. Together, let's pave the way for a brighter future where empathy and unity prevail—a place where everyone feels valued, heard, respected, and safe. It’s up to each of us to play our part, no matter how big or small, in creating the workplaces and world we want to see. It’s time for positive action. Encourage positive civil engagement. Consider organizing office-wide volunteer events or initiatives that promote community involvement. And let’s keep our workplaces politically neutral while encouraging voter participation—because our workplaces and nation thrive when everyone is engaged in shaping their future.

83% of the company visited Chicago for an energizing three days at our second Wistia off-site earlier this month. It was a relaxing and meeting-free event. I've been getting a few questions about how we do these and what they are like, so here is a bit more for those planning off-sites. Four years post-COVID, it's taken trial and error, but we've figured out how to create space for team members to connect in ways that feel unforced. Keep the good vibes flowing, avoid the "cringe" factor when facilitating social time with your hybrid or remote team, and structure it to enable connection and communicate clear expectations. Here's what's worked in creating spaces for socializing at Wistia: 1. We intentionally go off-site to facilitate non-work connections. In Chicago, we headed to a White Sox game, enjoyed culinary and architectural tours of a new city, and even had a team-wide karaoke session that drew an audience from the street. When team members have a chance to connect over new experiences, they build human-to-human rapport. This natural connection carries over when we all go home to our respective cities and return to the daily grind. It's much easier to work remotely with people you feel a connection to. 2. We make expectations super clear. In the past, we've received feedback that people weren't sure which activities were truly optional and which were not. Going from remote work every day to in-person socializing can feel daunting. By saying: "Hey, here's one thing each day we'd really encourage you to go to, and everything else is optional," we gave people the permission to focus on connecting when they wanted to, how they wanted to, and maintained a lovely, chill vibe. The only thing worse than not socializing is forced socializing. Find out how to make time for hanging out that feels work and pressure-free, and you'll be on to something good.
