Where Does Good Deal Flow Originate From? - Forge relationships with fellow investors at virtual or in-person events, communities, angel groups, and networks. - Engage with entrepreneurs beyond pitch meetings, since founders can facilitate introductions to other promising founders. - Collaborate with professionals such as investment bankers, legal, and financial advisors specializing in early and growth stage startups. - Explore opportunities within academic institutions and corporations and their innovation, investment, and startup programs. - Utilize platforms such as AngelList or those focused on secondary markets for curated deal aggregation, though some may entail participation fees. The strength of your network directly impacts the quality of investment prospects. Therefore, nurturing a robust referral network plays a pivotal role in an investor's success. How Founders should write their blurbs to attract VCs (Taught in Stanford MBA) 1/ Bet on the Jockey, not the Horses: The VCs really care about the founder/the founding team. The very first question they ask is who would be the best fit for this product, for this market, for this service, and so on. Why is this person the best person to run this business? So sell yourself first, then sell your startup. Tell them what your "Unfair advantage" is first. Tell them who you are first, then what you do. 2/ Short sentences This is needless to say in this short attention span world. Venture capitalists are not an exception. 3/ 80/20 principle: Like famous poets, or famous authors, they will spend a lot of time thinking, crafting, editing, rewriting. So you have to spend time on crafting that blurb. Practice, practice, and practice. You can first practice on your friends, ask them to give critical remarks. Only then, send it to actual investors. Because though the response rate is actually high, you only have 1 chance to open the door.

But here's the plot twist: after sharing our company's insights and visions, communication took an unexpected turn. 🕵️♂️ Despite multiple interactions and discussions about their interest, the investor mysteriously vanished into thin air. 🌪️ No responses, no updates, just radio silence. While startups are familiar with the ups and downs of the journey, this uncharted territory left us wondering: What's the best way to handle such situations? 🔦 Transparency and communication are golden in the startup-investor relationship. If an investor decides to step back, it's completely understandable – these decisions are part of the game. However, disappearing acts don't sit right in a world where collaboration and honesty are valued. 💼 Startups, here's my take on this dilemma: 1️⃣ Open Channels: Keep the lines of communication open. If the investor's interest wanes, a simple heads-up goes a long way in maintaining professional rapport. 2️⃣ Graceful Exit: Investors' priorities change, and that's okay. It's better to part ways on good terms than leave fellow entrepreneurs in the dark. 3️⃣ Networking Resilience: Just like in life, not all connections lead to lifelong partnerships.
