The Green Deal Ukraïna Energy and Climate Roadmap provides an overview and analysis of the energy and climate legislation that Ukraine must implement ahead of joining the EU. I am very proud I could work on this paper together with Dr Susanne Niesand Olga Bondarenko in the frames of the Green Deal Ukraїna project. The Roadmap is a living document that will be updated every year. This first version will focus on essentials: how is the process working on EU accession in general, and energy and climate? Who are the actors? What are topics at stake in 2023? The following editions will highlight what needs to happen year by year, and how Ukraine can be prosperous.

The deadline for submitting National Energy and Climate Plans has passed. Most of the European Member States failed to submit a plan showing how they will cut their share of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. What's next? “Climate goals will remain out of reach unless the final plans are seriously improved from their draft version,” - CATF’s Alejandra Muñoz Castañer. However, not all is lost If countries take the next weeks to present forward-looking plans with deep buy-in from industry and society.   If plans are not improved, NECPs risk becoming a box-ticking exercise, rather than a roadmap for effective implementation. As outlined by CATF in a recent blog, EU countries can apply last-minute fixes to improve their NECPs. Some countries, like Poland, flagged in advance that they will miss the deadline. CATF's Director for Central and Eastern Europe Tamara Lagurashvili stressed that time is of the essence. “As Poland moves away from coal over-reliance and imported Russian fossil fuels to zero carbon economy, a diverse decarbonisation strategy is crucial for a feasible, reliable, and socially responsible energy transition.” To help #Europe meet #EU targets, CATF released Playbooks for enhancing National Energy and Climate Plans, covering: 🏭 Methane mitigation   ⏬ Carbon capture and storage   ✨ Clean hydrogen   🪨 Superhot rock energy ✅ Small Modular Reactors   What happens now? Countries must submit final plans promptly. Later this year, the European Commission will assess if Europe is on track for 2030 goals. CATF urges the Commission to also stress-test these plans to ensure they can withstand current and future challenges. European member states are expected to submit a National Energy and Climate Plan showing how they will cut their share of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. NECPs are an important tool to guide member states towards acting to reduce GHG emissions and to reach their climate goals. An important part of building these plans is to have deep buy-in from industry and society. In agriculture, this is essential. No plan will move forward without policymakers understanding the challenges agriculture faces in each member state (they are very different), and the opportunities they have to reduce emissions from agriculture.
