📣 The Annual Single Market and Competitiveness report came out today. The EU has very strong assets to build on highly qualified engineers, excellence in research, quality infrastructure, a solid manufacturing base, a strong services sector, a competitive edge in the development of clean technologies, high-performance computers, quantum, and transformative digital technologies – and, of course, the Single Market as a springboard. Yet, the European economy faces challenges – both long-standing and more recent – related to climate change, geopolitical shifts, technological acceleration, high energy prices, demography, labor and skills shortages, strategic dependencies, and unfair international competition.
The 2024 report looks at the 9 drivers of sustainable competitiveness, which are at the core of long-term competitiveness agenda of the EU, thus contributing to the discussion between the Council, European Council and the European Parliament on progress and necessary measures regarding the future of the Single Market.
