🙌 A throwback to a great last week in Munich, Germany at The smarter E Intersolar ees - electrical energy storage Europe 2024! 60+ strong Fluence team engaged in conversations around the state of battery-based energy storage and the clean energy transition in Europe and globally. Some of the takeaways: 🔋 The number of players eyeing entry into the German market continues to increase. As companies try to understand the right path to enter the German market, the need for local knowledge around permitting, grid access, market knowledge, and product choices is key to success. 🔋 The recent decline in the cost of storage has pushed more projects into the green, including in markets like the Netherlands, previously seen as less advantageous. 🔋 Lowering the risk of market entry without running into multiple roadblocks and project delays requires strong partnerships with local expertise on the development, product, and optimization side. 🔋 The market continues to accelerate without a clear framework to unlock larger system value, for example, by reducing congestion management to better utilization of grid connections. Blunomy was thrilled to participate in the side event ‘Supplying French and German Industry with Electricity: Interdependencies, Challenges, and Potential,’ organized by Franco-German Office for the Energy Transition (DFBEW / OFATE) in April as part of the #HannoverMesse. We discussed levers to increase the penetration of industrial demand-side flexibility in our electric systems. The event highlighted the energy challenges and opportunities faced by industries in Germany and France and proposed concrete solutions to build an industrial system resilient to future energy crises and capable of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Some key takeaways from the discussion are: 💲 Energy costs have been a significant concern and challenge for our industries over the past two years. Short-term solutions helped industries partially mitigate these challenges, but long-term structural solutions should now be built to increase the resilience of the industry against volatile energy prices. ⚡ Alongside energy efficiency, long-term hedging, and PPAs, demand-side flexibility is a key lever to secure competitive prices for industries and get paid to reinforce our electricity supply security. 📈 Industrial demand-side flexibility has progressed unevenly between France and Germany, but its importance is expected to grow significantly in both countries as renewable energy penetration increases. 📑 Our study for the Alliance ALLICE consortium provided a state-of-the-art overview of industrial demand-side flexibility in France and highlighted levers to further increase its penetration in our electric system. ☝ Some of the recommendations we are making as part of the report to further develop industrial demand-side flexibility include: 1️⃣ Increasing long-term visibility on flexibility revenues to help industries invest in making their processes more flexible. 2️⃣ Incentivising the wide-scale emergence of energy services that embed flexibility for industries to facilitate the adoption of demand-side flexibility by the industrial sector as a whole. 3️⃣ Encouraging industry federations to facilitate the commercial dialogue between their members and demand-side flexibility operators and standardise contractual terms for their members to participate in demand-side flexibility mechanisms. 4️⃣ Increasing overall flexibility in industrial value chains to unlock demand-side flexibility currently restricted by tight delivery conditions. Leaving towards Copenhagen for the #Smart #Energy Systems International Conference #SESAAU2023: our leitmotiv for this edition is cooperation. We think that the effort done in the recent years to develop intelligent energy management systems is huge. But it may be vanified when, in a scenario of widespred installation of these systems, they will compete instead of cooperate. Our opinion is that they should cooperate, for example, by sharing storage infrastructures and coordinating the management of their multi-energy systems. Therefore, we are presenting three pieces of work: - Costanza Saletti, tomorrow in session 14, will show how to coordinate different prosumers (optimally managed by their own controller) to obtain benefits at heating network level; - Alaa Farhat Noureddine, from Hybrid Greentech - Energy Storage Intelligence, on Wednesday, is going to present in Session 24, the work carried out within the framework of the ALIGHT project about the optimal management of electric battery systems and their coordination; - Emanuela Marzi instead will focus on Power-to-Gas and synthetic methane longterm storage with an algoritm for the management of this kind of seasonal storage coordinated with district multi-energy management controllers (Wednesday, Session 28).
