In honoring how our combined efforts under the FSMA have led to incredible change and brought about huge shifts in the water and sanitation sectors, Margaret Maina, previous AfWASA representative and Kenyan sanitation sector leader remembered, "FSMA has helped support integrating sanitation into the water conversation in Africa, framing faecal sludge as a resource and advocating for valuing waste as an important and renewable product. From there and very symbollically, AfWA eventually renamed itself to AfWASA, bringing sanitation into its core efforts. The private and public sectors are now aware that sanitation is a source of wealth and money for the sector to harness." #AfricaSanitation #SDG6 #WASH

We are happy to announce our refreshed CBSA strategy for 2024 to 2027! Our current phase includes two shifts: 1. A nuanced definition of CBS that to better distinguish what makes this form of sanitation unique (the frequent and professional servicing) and what this enables: reaching informal settlements, enabling better reuse products, less water consumption and fewer carbon emissions, for instance. 2. An evolved focus on “mainstreaming” rather than “scaling” CBS. It is more than semantics: we believe that CBS can provide safe sanitation in areas that are hard to serve, and that its provision should grow drastically; but this growth will not happen only through the efforts of our members, as innovative as they are. Sanitation is a public good, and can only be deployed safely and affordably with strong and enabling government. CBS is no exception. Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Sustainable Development Goals | SDG Champion | Experienced Health Professional
It was a delight to participate as a panelist at the just-concluded Lagos International Water Conference (LIWAC) 2024. During the session, I acknowledged Lagos State’s giant strides in including women in decision-making before focusing on how women often bear the brunt of water issues. Being primarily responsible for water management in most households, they face the initial consequences of contamination. This is why integrating gender considerations into water and sanitation financing policies is highly essential. As a city defined by its aquatic beauty, water is a vital resource for Lagosians. I am therefore hopeful that, as Mr. Governor urged, the insightful discussions at this conference will lead to concrete actions to improve water resource management in our beloved state, thereby moving us forward in our achievement of SDG 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation. The SASTEP programme successfully demonstrates how the adoption of local manufacturing and commercialisation of innovative sanitation technologies can create jobs, boost the economy and provide safe, dignified sanitation for all. These technologies include water-efficient toilets, incineration toilets and dry sanitation technologies. The achievements of SASTEP provide a valuable blueprint for fellow African countries to follow in their footsteps, transforming the sanitation landscape across the continent. Collaboration between national governments, regional organisations and stakeholders are crucial for the sanitation future in Africa. https://sastep.org.za/ #SanitationForAll #SASTEP #sanitationinnovation #sanitationtechnology

Lagos Food Bank through the @agricoveryprogram work with local farmers to provide fresh, local produce to people facing hunger and rescue food that would otherwise go to waste. Most times , food banks go directly to the fields to get these great fruits and veggies before they go bad. That’s where the support of @foodbankvolunteers come in to help. The Agricultural Recovery Program (ARP), an initiative of @lagosfoodbank in partnership with The Global FoodBanking Network @foodbanking and supported by funding from The Rockefeller Foundation @rockefellerfdn and The PIMCO Foundation, is focused on addressing food loss at production level through the rescue of surplus agricultural produce which will be distributed to vulnerable households while also reducing the environmental consequences of food loss and waste and its impact on climate change. #THISISNOTALAGOSSTATEPROJECT #lagosfoodbankinitiative #agricoveryprogram #foodrescue #sdg1 #sdg12 #sdg17 #sustainabledevelopmentgoals #socialimpact #socialresponsibility #sustainability #partnerships #farmrescue #fruitrecovery #lfbi #agenda2033
