#FridayGift 12/24: Today's highlight is a report that explored the regulatory landscape of water and sanitation across Africa. By far, this is the most comprehensive report on this topic and its relevance remains despite its publication 2022. One of the reasons I enjoyed reading it as a WASH professional was the four categories of regulation that it explains for most countries in Africa. These include regulation by agency, by contract, by ministry and by self. It additionally provides the highlights of regulatory mechanisms, arrangements, instruments and their establishment and improvement. From accompanying reports at the ESAWAS website, more regional focused subsections of the Africawide report are also available. If you are in this space, I suggest that you keep a copy for your library. It will still be relevant 5 years from now. In the mean time, flip through the synthesized version below and download at: https://rb.gy/l32923 #Pref4Wash Sandec-Eawag #Regulation ESAWAS regulators association Yvonne Magawa

AFRICASAN7 This week is AfricaSan7 in Namibia. I had the opportunity to attend AfricaSan5 in Cape Town, South Africa a few years back. The uniqueness of the conference is its ability to bring to the fore many elements of WASH and the Sustainable Development Goals, including safely managed sanitation, hand hygiene for all and fecal sludge management. These are topics which are not always adequately covered in-depth during mainstream water conferences. AfricaSan7 is being held in November this year, the month also set aside to recognize World Toilet Day. According to the AfricaSan7 website details, "The Africa Sanitation (AfricaSan) Conference is a platform for technical and political dialogue to address the sanitation and hygiene challenges in Africa. The 7th Edition of the Conference is convened on the theme: “Strengthening Systems and Partnerships for Accelerated Action on Safely Managed Sanitation and Hygiene.” At the AfricaSan7 Conference, participants will take stock of the progress made on sanitation and hygiene related commitments at various levels. They will also share knowledge, experiences, good practices and innovative solutions to improve sanitation and hygiene services delivery in Africa." From this Sunday, SHF will be attending the 1st IWA Non-Sewered Sanitation (NSS) conference that will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa from 15 to 18 October. We will be engaging with partners and sector stakeholders in discussions around financing and innovations for non-sewered sanitation, which needs to be increasingly looked at to effectively tackle the world's sanitation crisis. It is a vital component of a comprehensive approach to sanitation, particularly in regions with diverse challenges and limited resources. With this in mind, SHF is looking forward to joining many of the interesting sessions and workshops including: - Bridging the funding gap for non-sewered sanitation: innovative revenue sources and contracting models - Innovative financing in unlocking the non-sewered sanitation pathway - AUSII - The new wheel to sanitation for all in Africa (presentation by our partner Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) Eden Mati-Mwangi, PMP® - Progress on Establishing a Utility Sanitation Tariff in Kenya (presentation by our partner Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP), Eden Mati-Mwangi, PMP® Are you attending? The AFRICASAN7 CONFERENCE was concluded successfully in Swakopmund Namibia with a call to realize the development potential of the sanitation economy. Of particular urgency is the need to address the sanitation failures associated with the disease burden constraining productivity of the labour force and degrading the environment. The Africa sanitation policy guidelines (ASPGs) provide the framework for promoting the sanitation economy.

Interested in the pathways to get to safe drinking water for all in rural areas? Listening to the launch of the WHO Guidelines for drinking-water quality: small water supplies and wondering how to improve management to meet this guidelines? Have a look at some of the resources below from our REACH | Water Security team 👇🏾
2.2 billion lack access to safe drinking water. Great progress was made in delivering access to drinking water infrastructure in the past decade, but it hasn't translated to safe drinking water. At REACH, we've been working on how professional service providers can expand their work to include water safety management, demonstrating new models to advance drinking water safety in rural areas. 📽 For an intro to our work, see the video below on Delivering Safe Water in Africa and Asia - with Katrina Charles, Saskia Nowicki, Robert Gakubia, Sara Marks, Nurul Osman For more details see our resources on water quality : 👉 https://lnkd.in/eXDjHNy5 Including: 📊 Work with Eawag, Helvetas, HYSAWA and FundiFix on developing fit-for-purpose laboratories for water service providers. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eD8ZwpNq 🚰 Establishing a new professional water service in Bangladesh, SafePani, to improve water safety in schools and healthcare facilities 👉 https://lnkd.in/dmM3Ypzx 👍 Opportunities on expanding water safety through regulation of rural water services 👉 https://lnkd.in/eme_rTs7
