Innovations in sanitation have come a long way in Africa, and they are paving the way for a sustainable approach to a healthier world. However, some major key innovations have emerged to tackle this challenge. In 2019, a South African company, EnviroLOO , introduced waterless urinals that do not require any water or electricity to function. These urinals use a patented dehydration process to convert urine into a solid material that can be safely disposed of without any harm to the environment. In 2018, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded a project in Kenya that introduced solar-powered toilets to improve sanitation in urban slum. This technique converts human waste into fertilizer, which can be used for agriculture. In 2017, a Nigerian entrepreneur, Oluwaseun Ayodeji Osowobi, launched a mobile toilet initiative called “Stand to End Rape” (STER). These mobile toilets are equipped with handwashing stations and are emptied regularly to ensure hygiene and prevent the spread of diseases. These innovations in sanitation are just a few examples of how Africa is taking a sustainable approach to a healthier world. Looking for ways to access the African market in various sectors? Did you know that safe sanitation impacts health, the economy, and the environment? In a world where nearly half of the global population lacks access to safe sanitation, the consequences are grave. Contaminated water sources resulting from unsafe sanitation practices lead to a staggering 432,000 annual diarrhoeal deaths, with children under 5 bearing the brunt. It's a silent crisis that most people aren't aware of. We're the Toilet Board Coalition, and we're changing that. We accelerate innovative sanitation solutions globally and understand that the economic impact of poor sanitation is equally staggering, costing the global economy over US$222.9 billion in 2015. However, for every US$1 invested in sanitation, we see a nearly six-fold return. Meet WASHKING, just one example from our portfolio. They've transformed low-income communities in Ghana with over 700 toilets and improved the lives of 6,000 daily users through improved hygiene. But we're not stopping there. Our goal is to build an army of 1,000 thriving local Sanitation Economy businesses, each contributing to a healthier world. Join us on September 27 for our Asia Investor Showcase and on September 28 for our Africa Investor & PPP Showcase. #FoodFactsFriday: In low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs), there are often common challenges: 👉 market waste management 👉 inadequate water and sanitation 👉 ageing, damaged or unsafe infrastructure As these markets can enable (or deter) access to food for residents and offer many food-based livelihood opportunities, they are critical to both #FoodSafety and sustainable regional #economic development. As such, #infrastructure improvements can support #FoodSystem transformation in critical ways. Find out how GAIN helped with the reconstruction of a local market in Tanzania: https://lnkd.in/gMbJ-KfP

Senior Development Expert - Enabling community institutions to be sustainable and financially viable and contribute to poverty graduation
"This publication examines good practices particularly those involving intermediaries—social enterprises, the private sector, and nongovernment organizations—in delivering water and sanitation services in informal settlements, and their potential for expansion. It presents case studies from Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and the Philippines. The learning is intended to encourage governments, water supply and sanitation utilities, and development financing institutions to incorporate intermediary service providers as valuable partners in large-scale, sustainable investments in water and sanitation service delivery." #sanitation #drinkingwater #informalsettlements #socialenterprises #sustainabledevelopment

Since 2015, we have extended our reach and impact beyond our core countries through WSUP Advisory. WSUP Advisory - our consultancy arm - undertakes commercial consultancy work globally and operates as an independently governed, for-profit, community interest company. We leverage the expertise gained in our core countries' programmes to help others while profits from these projects are #reinvested into WSUP's long-term work. This creates a win-win situation, allowing us to share best practices and support sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) solutions worldwide. With experts in citywide inclusive sanitation, utility #strengthening, and pro-poor water and sanitation service models, WSUP Advisory works with national and city-level stakeholders to develop WASH plans that not only deliver immediate impact for local communities but also increase long-term water security, promote energy efficiency, and reduce the vulnerability of water and sanitation infrastructure. Programme Management Officer, Human Settlements at UN-HABITAT (United Nation Human Settlements Programme)
"Don't fix the pipes. Fix the institutions that fix the pipes." The need for strong water and sanitation institutions was a recurring theme at the just concluded 2023 #IWA #WaterDevelopmentCongress in Kigali, Rwanda. In all the sessions I attended, speakers called for strong institutions, especially water and sanitation service providers that can: 1. Generate/attract and prudently utilize financial resources to reach the billions of people lacking these life-saving services. 2. Drive the circular economy agenda, including nature-based solutions. 3. Adopt innovation in technology and policy. 4. Design and build climate-smart/resilient infrastructure. 5. Embrace digital transformation. 6. Champion Inclusiveness and equality. 7. Nurture partnerships and multi-stakeholder collaboration. To quote my Executive Director, Maimunah Sharif's message at the opening ceremony, "focus must on the hundreds of thousands of local public service providers who are so critical to reaching SDG 6 in our cities and communities around the world, but who urgently need capacity and resources to play their full role. We call on everyone – member states, municipalities, financiers, and civil society - to join the movement for Water Operators’ Partnerships: to connect essential water and sanitation service providers in not-for-profit and solidarity-based peer partnerships through our Global Water Operators' Partnerships Alliance/UN-Habitat (GWOPA)".

𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒘𝒆'𝒗𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒊𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒂 𝒎𝒊𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒍𝒆, and it's a testament to the power of clean water and agriculture in transforming communities. Our water well project has turned a barren land into an oasis of hope for the Maasai people. Agriculture is thriving, offering sustainable livelihoods and opportunities, especially for women and girls in the community. They no longer need to walk kilometres to fetch water, often in harsh conditions. This, in turn, empowers them to pursue education and other dreams. But our journey is not complete. We're in the final stretch of building a protective fence around our land to secure our progress. To make this vision a reality, we still need your support. Every contribution, big or small, is crucial in completing this project and ensuring its long-term success. Join us in making a lasting impact. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gmbrhSpE.
