Tomorrow, Giving Tuesday, we kick off our annual fundraising campaign. Please consider donating to Fuse Theatre to help create "Theatre That Matters". It's been a long haul over the past 3 years since theaters went dark during the pandemic. It's only in the past year that we've been able to develop and perform in-person shows similar to what we did before. For the most part, we survive on grants and donations like yours that allow us to create original performances about stories that are not often told, delivered to audiences who might not otherwise see theatre. Thank you for your support. https://lnkd.in/gCGHKXDH

Classical music seems to be a high-pull magnet for myths and misconceptions... Today, as we launched our GivingTuesday campaign, I re-encountered one of the biggest, when asked: 'why would I donate to TYO - it's just for rich kids!' Ah. That cracking sound you hear right now is my heart breaking because - put simply - that's just not true. In donating to TYO, you are in fact donating to: - a program which is 43% kids from public schools, some of whom need fees assistance to participate - kids like the kid I once was - the ones who need bursaries or scholarships to pursue their love of music and experience the opportunities and benefits music participation brings - accessible and inclusive programs which have been proven time and again to grow better humans - ensemble participation increases resilience and social connection, improves academic outcomes and provides lifelong cognitive benefits - programs which punch above their weight in contributing to the cultural life of Tasmanian communities - an organisation which provides work for upward of 60 artistic, education and production specialists every year; and puts a huge amount of effort and resource into training and supporting emerging artists and arts practitioners for the benefit of our sector. TYO is a vibrant and vital part of Tasmania's cultural life and our state arts ecosystem. That's why I'm asking you to leave the myths at the door and consider a donation to TYO this GivingTuesday.
This Giving Tuesday, we're asking you to support TYO's work with young Tasmanian musicians and singers – because music is for life! Donate now at https://lnkd.in/ev2wVVdn We're aiming to raise $3000 by end of November to support TYO programs. TYO works with more than 200 young Tasmanian musicians and singers each year, connecting them to the joy of making music together - and the lifelong benefits of musical participation, including social connectedness, wellbeing, improved educational outcomes, skills and leadership development and resilience… Support Music for Life this GivingTuesday; and help us achieve our vision of Tasmania as a vibrant, unique place for classical music, where young people thrive.

Last week I wrote a post on my blog Row X about Press Forward, a $500 million fund from several prominent foundations to save and reinvent the local news industry. I discussed some reasons why I thought the nonprofit arts sector had not yet inspired a similar initiative. Maybe call it Arts Forward. (Link to my blog post in the comments.) 💲 Now the Professional Non-Profit Theater Coalition is lobbying Congress for $500 million annually for 5 years to fund the equivalent of 20% of the annual budgets of eligible theaters. According to the quotes in this article, they're arguing that it's justified based on the economic impact and social good the theaters generate. Plus, other industries get bailed out, why not nonprofit theaters? ❓ What do you think about asking for this public funding? What about the amount and the timeline? Do you think it could work? Is there a risk in trying? #arts #nonprofit

What do young Black men have to say about their economic future? In Technical.ly's THRIVING reporting project across focus groups, individual interviews and after following Jaquan Fields for a year, one of the clearest points is the mainstream narrative needs to get way more complicated. PLEASE listen to this episode of our audio documentary. This one is personal, as I've known Quan for almost 20 years. So I know Michael O'Bryan, Eugene Martin and Jon Kaufman will love this! Thinking of Simon Hauger too. Thanks Alex Lewis, John L. Myers, Nichole Currie, Jen Kinney, Sophie Bryan, Jessica Richards, Octavia Howell, Ellen Hwang, John Churchill, Catherine Wolfgang, Sandra Shea and many more for making it happen!
Episode 6 of Technical.ly's Thriving Audio Docuseries is available now! ‘It’s up to us to put the footwork in’: Quan Fields (aka Quany the Clown) on making it as a circus performer. “Some people, they don’t like the smell of elephant dung and sawdust and peanuts and popcorn, candy, all in the same room. But to me, it smells like magic.“ –Quan Fields Thriving is underwritten by the William Penn Foundation, the Knight Foundation, and The Pew Charitable Trusts. https://lnkd.in/euWQ-jKZ | #philly #philadelphia

15+ years of Leadership in for-profit (4 yrs) & non-profit organizations (12 yrs). Customer Service and Marketing SME.
Anyone connected to the world of Non-Profits has been experiencing the challenges of funding and diminishing audiences & clients since pre-pandemic days. The pandemic focused a huge spotlight on this issue and the evidence is visible everywhere you look. I've seen local theaters shut down, or reinvent themselves in the past, but what's happening now is unprecedented. One of the moments in this article that stands out to me is that athletic events and concerts seem to have fewer issues coming back from the pandemic. I have said to colleagues before that many times the impetus to purchase a ticket to a show isn't about how much the ticket costs, many times it's about the priority of the ticket buyer. If anyone wants to do something, no matter the cost, they will find a way to make it work in most scenarios. Because if a teenager can afford a ticket to Taylor Swift they can certainly afford a $30-$40-$50 ticket to the theater (or more depending on your city). But is that the priority for how they want to spend their money? Same goes for anyone at any age. So how do we make theater a priority again for our existing audiences as well as the new audiences we desperately need? Do we need to be putting more content online? Do we need to focus less on "bread & butter" shows like My Fair Lady, Romeo & Juliet, etc. so we can present more new works that speak to our current lived experiences? What are the priorities for our audiences these days? These seem like simple questions, and in many ways they are. But how and when we ask is critically important because in many cases, if they haven't been asked yet, it may unfortunately be too late.

⭐ The Uncharitable Movie looks amazing Jim Hayhurst! The stark double standard between how nonprofits vs for-profits are viewed is a topic that drives me mad. 😡 🔎 It's okay for for-profit's to fail but it's not okay for a #charity to ever fail. We celebrate #entrepreneurs who miss the mark yet when it's a nonprofit, we persecute their #leadership. 🔎 This is what drives #charities to paint a rosy picture of all their work - they must sweep failures under the rug or they will lose their funding. Nonprofits cannot open up about what has worked and what hasn't because any failure means lost funding. 🔎 Of course, there are some bad actors in the nonprofit space, but no more and I'm quite certain much less than in the for-profit space. We must enable everyone and every entity to learn from #failure so they can do even better work. This double-standard drives charities to mediocrity rather than to the brilliance they are capable of. This must change if we are to successfully combat the worlds most challenging problems. 🌍
Here's where you can watch "UnCharitable" in select theatres in the US (Sep 22) and Canada (Oct 22). Even better, your company, organization and collection of impact orgs can do a theatrical buyout. "Dinner and a movie" with your donors, board, fellow impact leaders, and community. Spread the word, buy tickets for friends, get the movement going. #uncharitablemovie #philanthropy #charities #nonprofits Uncharitable Movie

Living the dream at Retired
8moTo me, "Theatre That Matters" is delivering theatre to people who might not ordinarily have access. For example, bi-lingual performances of shows like “Tomas and the Library Lady” or “Lily’s Wings” performed in community centers, schools or libraries to children and their parents, at no charge. That’s one of the exciting things that Fuse Theatre is doing, and I’m proud to be part of.
