If you wanted to get some chickens & you didn’t know a huge amount about chickens but you had a friend who spent a majority of her day with chickens from all different farms. She knew the chickens, the families of chickens & the communities those chickens came from. She also came from generations & generations of chicken advocates/farmers. You could say, chickens were her area of expertise. Would you ask her about buying chickens? Or would you go online & trust the guidance of people you have never met, people who have never had chickens? People who have a lot to say about chickens but have never actually looked after them themselves? People who have never sat with a battery hen & thought how can I make your life better, people who think caging chickens is ok because it’s been done for 200 years? If you knew 80% of battery hens just wanted the same freedom as cage free chickens, would you listen to the 20% who thought being a battery hen was the best life was going to get for them? We have one chance to get this right. Please speak to the people who are on the ground at a grass roots level, get off the internet & listen to the people you trust.

An eagle among chickens. A book that I read it high school titled" Inside Africa- A selection of short stories" inspired me to post. I am focusing on a story titled " The parable of the eagle" about an eagle that grew up among chickens and given chickens' food to eat. It ended up believing that it was a chicken not the king of the birds. The naturalist saw it and made it fly away after two failed attempts. After analysing the story I came up with the following two scenarios and questions. 1. The eagle realized that it was an eagle, it felt underappreciated by the chickens when it was still very young and decided to fly away. It was so determined and sure that it would be able to fly. It stretched out it's wings and took the first step, it fell to the ground when it had not covered a distance and got injured. It lay there unable to rise up, the chickens saw it and said " this is the eagle that thought it was better than us and tried to fly away, look at it now". The eagle tried to rise up, it realized that it made a mistake when it tried to fly away when it was not ready. It hoped that it would get a second chance among the chickens. Question: Did the eagle deserve a second chance? 2. The naturalist tried to make the eagle fly away but he was unsuccessful and gave up. The eagle was content of being a chicken and had no interest in flying away like an eagle. Question: Was there a need for the eagle to realize that it was an eagle and fly away? These scenarios may relate to some people in their careers as the first one relates to me.

Name the chicken competition! We took delivery of our 5 new chickens yesterday. What an eggcellent afternoon that was - getting the chicken run ready, picking 5 chickens and releasing them into their new home. We did it without too much yolking about, though we did say one of them was called Horse in order to get our son to actually go and look (he loves horses). We now need to crack on with selecting names for the other 4 (I think Horse will end up sticking as a name). Did you know there is a way to train a chicken to come when their name is called; Move toward your chosen chicken while repeating her name and try to feed her with the treat on your hand. Failing that, put it on the floor and take a step back, repeating her name all the while. So, your chicken names suggestions would be much appreciated. ------------------------------------------------------------------- My name is Karen. When I'm not whiling away the hours looking at chickens, I help people reduce their household utility bills, or show then how to earn an extra income stream :)

Interesting read on the apprehensions surrounding California's Proposition 12 among U.S. pork producers. While the intent behind Prop 12 is to shift industry standards, the implementation appears to be causing more harm than good. For consumers, there's an element of market uncertainty as to whether or not the supply will meet the demand, potentially leading to limited choices and availability. From an animal welfare standpoint, the proposition might inadvertently create logistical challenges that could stress animals further, as they may have to be transported longer distances to meet these specific regulations. Lastly, for producers, the law imposes a set of demands that aren't universally aligned with out-of-state production practices, creating an operational quagmire for those who want to sell in California. It's crucial to think about these implications carefully, and this article captures those concerns well. #california #prop12
