When Megan Mayhew-Bergman and I started GreenStory we wanted to have giving baked into our business model. That’s a tricky thing to do for a small startup — we’re juggling the work, business development, our own marketing plus all the back end stuff like taxes. Fortunately we knew about an amazing non-profit organization called 1% for the Planet for the Planet. Co-founded by Yvon Chinourd of Patagonia, 1% makes it super easy for businesses to give to grassroots environmental organizations. The member company pledges 1% of its annual revenue; 1% for the Planet identifies qualified beneficiaries and facilitates the donation. There’s a load of other benefits, as member companies become part of a powerful network including companies like Patagonia, Klean Kanteen® and Cotopaxi. This all makes a real impact — to date 1% members have donated over $635 million. Kate Williams and her team have done a phenomenal job building 1% for the Planet into something special. Did you know that #givingtuesday (today!) is the biggest fundraising day of the year for nonprofits like us? Every year, on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, millions of people donate to make the critical work of nonprofits possible. Unfortunately, environmental organizations receive a small fraction of that. In fact, environmental causes receive only 2% of philanthropic giving despite their vital importance. As a result, these organizations are under-resourced in their fight to keep our planet healthy. Seed exists to help solve this issue. Over the past nine years, we've donated over $15 million in services to help these organizations overcome this resource challenge. We've helped over 200 organizations in their missions to protect our oceans, communities, wildlife, and much more. We've also provided professional development experiences to more than 800 volunteers, empowering them to become more effective leaders for sustainability. While we're incredibly proud of our work so far, we know it's just the beginning. This work is needed by countless organizations and people across the world. That's why we've created our "30x30 Strategy", our plan for opening 30 chapters across the U.S. and beyond by 2030. Ultimately, our vision is to empower people and organizations all over the world to protect our planet and keep our environments safe and healthy. But we can't do this alone. What value are they getting from their donation. Often times reframing a donation request or going to the appropriate source yields more passion, enthusiasm and therefore donations.

According to the World Food Program, 690 million people worldwide suffer from hunger, and 60% of them are women and girls. In the United States, Black households are twice as likely to experience food insecurity as white households. To address this issue, Black-led organizations worldwide are working towards sustainable solutions that promote food security, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture.
