As we enter into Ramadan, many observing the sacred month will be thinking about making gifts and donations; and indeed many charities have begun to ask for Fidyah and other donations. Ramadan is a month of exceptional generosity in the Muslim community; and it is right that participants look to make sure their money reaches the right recipients. As the year winds down, many of our clients look toward clothing and household item donations as a means to give back and optimize tax deductions. Donating your used clothing and household items to a worthy charity does 3 great things: - Gives you a tax deduction so you potentially pay less in taxes - Helps a worthy charity - Cleans out the extra items from your house How can you make this deduction easy? Check out the online resources listed in this article for identifying the fair market value of the items you are contributing. Make sure you get a receipt from the charity. Don’t drop your items at the unattended drop box and walk away without a signed receipt. Some recent feedback from a small charity leader. - 6 in 10 people have reduced their annual charitable donations as a result of the cost of living crisis - And trying to raise funds as a small charity is HARD - The documentation required for grant applications is ever increasing - great in theory to ensure that there are high standards of governance.... - But the reality is that most small charities are understaffed, overworked and don't have the skills readily available to prepare this information - Grant providers need to find the right balance - not tying up key charity resource spending hours in applying for funding, but also being sure that charity is properly set-up to spend the money wisely As a finance professional, a lot of these governance tasks will be familiar to you. Even if you are not in the financial position to donate to your favourite charity right now, you can plan to include charitable giving in your Will. By donating in the form of a charitable bequest, which is only donated after death, it is easier to donate in larger amounts than you would normally be able to during a lifetime and support the causes and charities you care about in a meaningful way.
