21-Year-Old Bethany had no idea what she was getting herself into. Over a month’s time in 2015, she graduated nursing school, got married, took her NCLEX, and started her first “big kid” job with tax forms to prove it. What’s funny is while I grew up around Mercy/St. Mary’s and had great clinical experiences there, my deciding factor in accepting Mercy’s offer was based on it being day shift. Now as a recruiter, I talk to candidate’s all the time about their “why” and help them process through being offered multiple units and multiple hospitals. I didn’t know my “why” back in 2015, but I do now. My why is my current/past leaders who invest in me and not only gave me a job but a full-blown career. Kayla Drady Scott Sell, CIR Jacqueline Truesdale, MBA-HM, BSN, RN Danielle Ferguson My why is an organization that values work-life balance, starting each meeting with a clear mind & positive intentions, and views us as people before “employees” My why is this team of 39 people who have become my community. My why is doing work that feels big and important in the spirit of helping others. It’s a reality that not everyone enjoys their job and there is very much a “working for the weekend” mentality. No offense to those people, but I much prefer loving my weekends AND my weekdays. Cheers to 9 years (a day early) and it never feeling like a “job!” #BeAMercyNurse #nurserecruiter #talentacquisition #workanniversary #9years #Mercy #humanresources

if you're hiring, a friendly reminder that a person's ability to write out their entire employment, volunteering and education history twice (or more) does not impact their ability to work. however, it might make it less likely they apply <3

Author, Educator, Keynote Speaker, Leader, Human. I help schools and districts improve their data. TSI and CSI schools
I am entering my 30th year in youth services. Over the years I have seen alot of things. Never have I seen the burnout in education and youth services. I remember when I started my career in 1995, with vigor, vigilance, unrelenting, and uncompromising. I was gonna save the world. I use the word "save" because my mentors did. What my mentors failed to explain was that being a savior was hard work. When you're a savior the responsibility, vision, and expectations are yours to create, spread, assess, and refine. Further, people, initiatives, and program success all falls at your feet. Being a savior is also self serving and a bit narcissistic. It's why I have chosen to be a fulltime server. My job as I see it, is to help people, programs, or initiatives to be what they want to be. Versus superimposing my beliefs onto their work. Now I provide sound advice, information, data, and a neutral voice. You see being a server is about collaboration, listening, hearing, and developing things to empower people. Being a savior is monolithic, dictation, and control. So I ask are you a server or savior?

The True Value of Integrity: Choosing Commitment Over Compensation Recently, I faced a challenging decision that tested my commitment to integrity. As an unemployed professional actively seeking work, I was presented with a lucrative opportunity that clashed with a prior commitment I had made to my high school band program's alumni concert. Despite not playing anymore, I had volunteered to serve as a photographer and videographer for the event, dedicating my entire day to capturing the spirit and talent of the program. The decision was tough, but I made it almost immediately. Accepting the paid gig meant financial relief, yet it also meant breaking a promise to a community that had been a significant part of my life. I chose to honor my commitment, declining the paid opportunity. This choice wasn't about financial gain but about staying true to my word and supporting a program that continues to make a profound impact on its community. It reminded me that integrity isn't just about the big gestures; it's found in the choices we make every day, especially when those choices aren't easy. Through this experience, I've learned that integrity might not always lead to immediate financial benefits, but it builds something more lasting—trust and respect from those around us. I'm proud of my decision, and I'm excited to share the results of this memorable day with the community, showcasing the incredible talent of our young musicians. In times when we are pushed to prioritize personal gain, it is crucial to remember that our commitments shape not only our character but also the world around us. Sometimes, filling our cups isn't about making money—it's about making a difference.

I would add that everyone has to work in the service industry before they can graduate. This way we can gain an appreciation for how hard it is and maybe be a little nicer to those who are serving us. What do you think should be mandatory?
