How is a feeling of world produced through staged material cultures? What if 'empty space' is not the starting point for scenography? These questions are the throughline for my new article 'Pluriversal scenographics and staging world feelings' in Cultural Geographies. You can also read it for free (open access). Influenced by Global South epistemologies, it argues how scenographic practices stage 'possible reals' and what this means for a renewed political task for scenography. It also maps the argument against 'empty space' scenographics and the technique of the void (or voiding) in theatre making as (un)intentionally reinforcing colonial spatial imaginaries. Empty space is a colonial concept. I offer pluriversal scenographics as one way of investigating the worlding narratives of the Global North and the spatial politics this produces. This is also my first time publishing in a cultural geography context, and it has been super useful to test these ideas with a new audience in mind. I really do appreciate all the guidance from the peer reviewers and editors. Read for free here: https://lnkd.in/dVgKaAQn

Some of the most interesting works of creation understand the old rules enough and then break them. Others tell old stories in new ways. This is how Istanbul’s new-age artists are retelling its old fables. My article in Counter Arts. Happy weekend reading! #storytelling #art #photography #culture #travel

In recent years I notice some art summaries or object descriptions either miss some biographical details, tell too much, or add sort of PC notes that seem to color the history or my knowledge as it was—leaving little to the imagination for me or the so-called average art/museum-goer. On the other hand, research revealing previously unknown info that “might” enhance our understanding can be helpful. For example, at an expansive Degas exhibit a few years ago the actual seedy backstage goings on of those seemingly quotidian ballet paintings was a necessary if sad commentary on those times if not our own. And so, l highly recommend this WSJ piece from a former museum guard on a better way to experience art instead of just reading all the blurbs and “tombstones” before actually looking at and experiencing the art. I suppose this could apply to other art, such as dramaturgy in theater, which now contextualzes so much background of a show as to be overwhelming or condescending depending on your threshold—unless the assumption is the average (?) theater-goer, like the average (?) museum visitor, is merely a doe-eyed tabula rasa—plumply ripe for the imprinting of old and new history from the morally superior and highly educated few.

I am interested in the evaluation of views over time and focus on the illusion of 'seeing' and its uncertainty. I investigate questions like: "How do we see another person? How do other people see me and how do I see myself? "What are the consequences on society when we learn to view from different points of view? Will the codes of society change then?" This is my short story on #Neorealism, fictional and non-fictional, that gives you all the vibes of the making of a post WWII neorealist movie in Italy. "Neorealist cinema remains the most internationally well-known product of this era, but the phenomenon was paralleled in art, literature and photography, the different fields influencing each other in various ways." In galleries and museums –dedicated temples of art — the viewing context makes a huge difference. 1. We step into the world of the artist and gallery owner. We are immediately and unconsciously hit by the placement of the paintings, the gallery’s walls, the lighting, and the furniture. 2. We feel a magic in this experience — the hush of the gallery, the texture of a painting under our fingertips, and the actual physical presence afforded by the sheer closeness with the art object itself. 3. We soak up the ambiance and embraced the total experience. 4. Now, we’re experiencing online art viewing. Which do you like best. Online viewing where you can scroll by dozens of images or in person viewing at a gallery, museum, or art show.

“ARCHICINE” poster series, created by federico babina, illustrates iconic houses from different classical movies. While the artworks create a more solid image of the homes for the viewers, the buildings in the films become the protagonists of the posters. In my research of the theme Panta Hen, all is one, I discovered the scientist von Humboldt (18th century). He looked for the deeper patterns in nature, based on questions such as: "Why are there fewer birds in India than in South America and why are tigers only found in Asia?" He saw the damage caused by deforestation and the colonial system and developed a new view of nature. This saw the earth as one large organism, in which everything is connected and is controlled and animated by internal forces, Het developed the concept of 'The Web of Life', the idea in which nature is considered and we become aware of its vulnerability. Everything is interconnected and if one thread is pulled apart, the entire fabric unravels. This moved me deeply because it is very actual, and I wanted to translate this visually. Because it is about the coherence of everything I focussed on the lines that connect the small canvasses I used.
