Last year, I enrolled in a leadership course at Ivey Business School, aiming to refine my leadership characteristics for the dual benefit of the future organization that I will work for and the public. An invaluable lesson that emerged from this educational journey underscores the paramount importance of embracing transparency. This lesson's essence is remarkably straightforward: if you're genuinely committed to making the most informed decisions, there's no need for concealment. Our responsibility, both to our organization and the wider community, hinges on the commitment to consistently deliver our best efforts. However, acknowledging the inevitability of mistakes is equally pivotal. Transparency isn't confined to showcasing triumphs; it's about openly admitting when we've encountered setbacks. The embrace of transparency extends beyond mere rhetoric; it forms a language that communicates honesty and integrity to our employees and everyone we engage with. Admittedly, the trajectory we traverse may not always yield the anticipated outcomes. This discrepancy arises because, more often than not, we are privy to only a fraction of the information, not the entire narrative. Regrettably, the widespread adoption of this transparent approach remains sparse, particularly within public and governmental organizations. The prevalent focus tends to pivot more towards political maneuvers and the relentless pursuit of power than the earnest resolution of issues and the authentic service of the public. As leaders, it is incumbent upon us to effect a paradigm shift. Let's prioritize open communication, embracing mistakes as integral to the growth process, and steering towards solutions that genuinely resonate with the needs of the public. In a landscape where information is fragmented, transparency becomes the compass guiding us towards authentic and effective leadership. Let’s follow up a little on the last topic around time span and where someone operates best. It has some big implications in terms of succession planning. When leaders plan for their successors, they most often pick their highest-performing employee in a role that reports to the current leader. Often the reason that employee is doing so well is that their natural time span lines up so well with where they are in the organizational structure (along with skills, abilities, experience, etc.). Once a person is promoted, the time span for which they need to operate changes. And yet it doesn’t change in the person. I’ve witnessed this in a number of people through the years, and I’m sure you have examples too. The curious thing is that we continue to walk down the same road without looking for new answers. In 1976, Dr. Peter coined the term and wrote the book – The Peter Principle. (I highly recommend this dated video, it’s got some great nuggets! https://lnkd.in/dcY_8Qvs) If only there was a way to get some insight into this problem…………! #SuccessionPlanning #Management #LeadershipTransition #PersonalDevelopment #Mike’sThoughts #TRAITS #TRAITStools

Questions are useful tools, they open lines of communications and give us information. Remember that all questions are perspectives and we frame our understandings through the lens they provide. https://shorturl.at/3viya
