Fantastic episode! This is a must listen for anyone in the child protection sector. It covered so much rich discussion: - Moving from agent, to advocate to activist (I'm reflection on what this means in a research context) - 'The hill you are willing to get fired on', where you sit morally in the work, what are your non-negotiables - How you can advocate/activate/challenge in your role - The evidence from blind removal studies I'm so excited to dive into Jessica A. Pryce, Ph.D., MSW 's book for more!

This week’s episode is with Jessica A. Pryce, Ph.D., MSW. We discuss her new book, Broken: Tranforming Child Protective Services. That was just the jumping off point to a rich conversation. You definitely want to tune in to this one. When I first picked up her book I was struck by a framework or process that she introduced. She described it as moving from being an agent of the system to being an advocate and then an activist. We unpack these terms, the process, and where Jessica and I see ourselves at this point in our lives. We also get into a discussion of whether or not child protective services can in fact be transformed. We wrap by touching on Jessica’s Ted Talk and her perspective on termination of parent rights. Are you an agent, advocate, or activist? #podcast #proximity #theproximityprocess #transformation #childwelfare #cps #tpr https://lnkd.in/gW_RYbFs

What does freedom mean to you? This is where Corey Best and I start this episode about the reunion he was about to have with his son after 19 years. The gitty, confusing, and long awaited anticipation was palpable throughout what became a two part conversation. Today’s episode is part one. But why the 19 year separation? This is what we get into throughout our conversation. What is the impact of ASFA and TPR as a policy choice, a judge who doesn’t see the man and father standing in front of them, or how adoption can erase parents? The point isn’t that parents change and families reunite. The point is that systems change starts with us, people like me. I have to see myself in a new way. I have to understand my contribution to systems that separate families. I have to take responsibility. What is your view of termination of parental rights? https://lnkd.in/e7MHJGJw

Not 'me and my child', but 'us and our children' - Matt Bawler This was really inspiring and refreshing to hear. And I can only imagine how reassuring and uplifting this must feel to a parent. When we take on the role of an educator, the child is our responsibility too, not just the parents'/carer's... And yes it's important to have professional boundaries, but an educator is not just a career or a service, and sharing that love, care and investment the educator has in a child will foster more secure relationships and triangulation between the educator, child and parent/carer. Matt Bawler talks about reframing language both for children and adults, in a wider conversation about Growth Mindset. We discuss many things within this, including: 👉🏽 Losing teaches you more than winning 👉🏽 Is competition a bad thing? And am I enough? 👉🏽 Not wrapping children in cotton wool 👉🏽 Consistent co-regulation 👉🏽 Skills-based adaptability, 👉🏽 Gender-normative stereotypes 👉🏽 Getting it right from the start: Proactive vs reactive 👉🏽 Celebrating mistakes If you want to listen, here's the link...but make sure you don't keep your views to yourself, share your thoughts to keep these conversations going... https://lnkd.in/e3HpuY4f #GrowthMindset #FixedMindset #CarolDweck #ProductVsProcess #CelebratingMistakes #ProactiveVsReactive #LifeLongLearning #ParentsCarers #LosingVsWinning #CriticalThinking #IAmEnough #CoRegulation #SelfRegulation #SelfEsteem #Resilience #SenseOfSelf #Adaptability #Advocacy #ProfessionalBoundaries #ProfessionalLove #TheVoiceOfEarlyChildhood #EarlyChildhood #EarlyYears #LovingPedagogy #EarlyYearsPodcast #EarlyChildhoodPodcast #EducationPodcast
