Wisdom from David Dredge on risk and convexity: “The great stop losses [are] always something to keep in the back of your mind: Risk isn’t what you think is going to happen; risk is what hurts if it happens.” Other ideas to improve upon modern portfolio theory’s and the effecient market hypothesis’s failures which stem from optimizing to the mean and seeking a “fiduciary world” with no skin in the game: Drive faster cars with better brakes. Buy risk when cheap; sell risk when expensive. The stupidity of “Sharpe world”: “we only look at what did happen; we don’t look at what could have happened.” “Probability vs possibility: the financial world measures risk within a probability distribution; actual risk is what resides within the possibility distribution.” I think fewer investors follow these ideas because they require more work up front and breaking the mimetic loop perpetuated by the consensus industry. Well worth the listen and follow up study (& implementation) of convexity!
