Difficult for T&F leagues to succeed.
Reason 1 - Team sports vs Individual sports.
Its the same as to why Badminton & Tennis leagues haven't succeeded in India. whereas cricket, kabaddi, football have.
In League sports, Audience sticks around for the TEAM. But if the league is too dependent on its STARS... then the league's initial success fizzles out very fast.
Reason 2 - Linear Predictable Performance
In cricket a star player can have a bad patch and at the same time an unknown player can score centuries or take multiple wickets. Depending on your day, your form can change. Bumrah can go for 15 RPO and Stuart Binny can take 7 wickets in an innings.
But in Athletics it generally remains consistent with linear growth. A 100m runner with under 10s timing will always outperform a runner who has never timed under 10.70s.
Without unpredictability, there is no excitement in League games.
