I give it my best to practice what I preach, and here, by supporting the Lindbergh Schools Foundation who does a remarkable job investing in Lindbergh Schools students. If you've been thinking about a way a give, this is a worthy cause for our children. #education #investinginkids

This story has really captured the hearts & minds of people near & far. A beautifully simple story in so many respects, but also an embodiment of what community regeneration means: connection, revival, action & hope. https://lnkd.in/exnn6ubk

In our city, many nonprofits in town provide services to fight generations of financial disparity and discrimination led by Redlining. In this government-endorsed practice, maps color-coded neighborhoods based on race, effectively dictating who could access housing loans. Communities marked in red, predominantly non-white neighborhoods, were deemed "risky" for lenders. With this in mind, Texas A&M University-San Antonio approached us last year with the idea of creating a short documentary about the history of redlining in our city. Our 6-month project led us through the heartbeats and backstreets of San Antonio, unearthing stories of resilience, displacement, and transformation. It became more than just a film; it was a profound journey of appreciation for the indomitable spirit of this city's residents. Dive into this narrative and join us as we unpack the lasting impact of redlining on our community and, most importantly, the unwavering hope for a brighter, more inclusive future. And here's Part II: Now, I can help my neighbors and my city the most by serving in city government. I again feel called by a higher power to step up. To bring all I have to bear, including my: - knowledge of local government, - entrepreneurial & collaborative attitude, - ability to get things done, - love of people, - wide-ranging relationships in the community, - commitment to ethics, - progressive ideas for change, and - desire to serve others. How will this campaign unfold, you ask? - I’m legally allowed to start receiving donations on August 8, 2023. - The primary election will be on March 5, 2024. - If no candidate gets more than 50%, there will be a general election on November 5, 2024. - The winner starts this full-time job in January 2025. During the campaign, I’ll continue working for Catalyze SV. However, I'm handing off my San Jose duties to my colleagues in the spirit of ethical nonprofit governance. The main theme that has grounded my work for years will also be the center of this campaign: Building Community. Together, we'll build a community in which we can all: - afford housing - feel welcome and safe - prosper - experience a healthy environment - get around easily - live close to shops, jobs, & green space - feel in San Jose a sense of joy, history & civic pride - receive quality city services - be heard by our city government and understand how we can impact its decisions To accomplish these things, I will focus on 6 priorities once elected: 1. Reducing the Cost of Housing & the Extent of Homelessness 2. Safer Streets & Smarter Approaches to Public Safety 3. Growing, Celebrating, & Conserving: Improving District 6 Neighborhoods & San Jose 4. A City for All of Us Means More Shared Prosperity 5. An Accessible, Responsive, Transparent City Government 6. A Well-Run District 6 Office Working for You I pledge to run a campaign of integrity rooted in the issues. In the weeks ahead, I’m eager to talk more about my ideas for San Jose and hear more of yours too! I'm gonna need your support in my City Council campaign. Call me at (408) 883-0863 or email me at alexforsanjose@gmail.com to discuss my candidacy and how you can help. Or visit alexshoor.com to sign up to learn more. And if you're in town, register for our Meet the Candidate Campaign Kickoff on Saturday, 8/12 from 9-11:30 am at the Rose Garden Farmers Market on Dana Ave at Lincoln High School. https://lnkd.in/gsJ89Jkq I hope to see you soon in the community and on the campaign trail! "As money continues to be thrown around and politicians increasingly get involved in shaping how we collectively mourn and remember our friends and family, I hope you will join me in starting a public dialogue framed by these questions: What actions have other business owners taken in response to mass shootings at their businesses? Do tourist attractions and gift shop trinkets (the OnePulse Foundation already has an online storefront selling T-shirts, tote bags, and yard signs) appropriately honor our slain friends and family? Who benefits from keeping the Pulse memorial a privately owned space and what are the ramifications of this? Would we benefit from creating a public memorial elsewhere that everyone could freely access at any time, without restrictions? How can we refocus our efforts and our funds to create a publicly owned Pulse memorial?" https://lnkd.in/eqpDfq8C

🗞️OP-ED: BIDs at 40: Four decades of building a New York City for everyone Our city’s partnership with business improvement districts enters its fifth decade stronger than ever, write SBS Commissioner Kevin D. Kim and NYC BID Association Co-chairs Erin Piscopink and Robert Benfatto. In 1984, New York City was pulling itself out from the depths of a decade of crisis. The city shed more than one-tenth of its population in the prior decade, arsonists scorched entire blocks of homes and businesses, and families that had called New York home for generations were fleeing to the suburbs. Near Union Square, a handful of shopkeepers decided to band together and plant a stake in their city’s future. Not content with scrubbing graffiti from their windows each morning, they formed the Union Square Partnership—the city's first Business Improvement District or “BID.” Over the last 40 years, New York City has become home to the nation’s largest network of BIDs, with 75 non-profit organizations covering nearly 300 miles of commercial corridors that – last year alone - infused more than $194 million in services into our city’s local neighborhoods and economy. Marketing Innovation Executive | SVP, Client Experience | Strategic Visionary | Digital Disruptor | End-to-End Program Delivery
It's interesting to see what happens when you speak out. In this case, it’s an invitation via Tim Eby to join the board at the St. Louis Civic Pride Foundation and the honor that comes with serving. The Foundation is an education non-profit, part of Explore St. Louis, our local convention and tourism bureau. The mission: to energize St. Louisans to support their community. Here’s where I editorialize. This is an example of passion + need = opportunity. I'm passionate and vocal that each of us needs to SHOW UP to improve the cities we live in, for ourselves and the generations to come. And my home town, which has so much potential and resources, also has many challenges. Improving civic pride is one of dozens of things needed to address those challenges. Which leads to opportunty: when someone comes knocking, asking for help, in my experience you find a way to help. Bottom line: just say yes! I’m excited to join my fellow board members, roll up my sleeves and get to work!
