I recently sat in an annual community townhall meeting with a fellow board member, Frederick Baba, who's leadership values were on full display. Delivering a tough economic report to a tougher crowd, he drove transparency and embodied integrity. While he, at large, inherited many of the challenges of previous community boards, Fred did not shy away from the tough issues. #Accountability and #Ownership. That's true leadership. It's easy to say, "it's not my fault," and believe me, this rang true in Fred's case. But it's far more profound to say, "I take ownership." And when we do this, it's easily recognized and appreciated by many. This reminds me of the tenets shared in Jocko Willink's #ExtremeOwnership. Extreme ownership means leaders take full responsibility for everything that happens under their watch, including mistakes and failures. Those who walk in integrity walk securely. Thank you Frederick Baba for serving those in your community, not pointing fingers and taking extreme ownership in hopes of a brighter future.

True diversity matters. What does your place of work look like as they claim to be diverse? Is the leadership primarily white, cis people?  if so, then the mark has been missed, and they are losing out on the very voices they claim are important to them.  We need the voices of our sisters and brothers who have be silenced in order to make measurable and effective change. And we need those voices in leadership positions. 

It's important to question and scrutinize any group that self-appoints leadership without a democratic process or community consensus. Legitimate leadership should be based on transparency, representation, and accountability to those they claim to represent. Without these principles, such actions undermine democratic values and the voices of the broader community they purport to lead. #RutoMustGo #Rejectfinancebill2024
