For more than a century, metro Atlanta has been home to countless leaders and organizations that have worked to advance civil rights and racial equity. Still, as Atlanta leads the nation as a welcoming location with a rich Black community, systemic racism, immobility and inequity are all too prevalent. The Metro Atlanta Chamber honors the region's civil rights history and is embodying the urgency of now to rally the region's business community to take bold actions that help solve some of our most pressing problems through ATL Action for Racial Equity. 🎤Story time: While in grad school at Tufts University in their Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Leadership program, my last semester, I took a class on Gender Theory at The Fletcher School at Tufts University with Professor Kimberly Theidon. For my final project I created a campaigned titled “Mics for the Missing.” Not only did I get an A, but Professor Theidon encouraged me to transform my project into a real campaign. So I did! I called up my accountability buddy and classmate Mary-Alexandra Molina, and we organized our first event on February 3, 2023, turning a grassroots initiative into a movement and organization. Just 14 months later, we’re co-organizing with some of the highest-ranking officials in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and we’re not stopping here. We have much more to come. 🎤We amplify the missing and advocate for change. Too often missing Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) are overlooked. In 2022, U.S. Congress named this a “silent epidemic,” and we are breaking the silence with community action. We’re just getting started. Thank you to all the esteemed officials who co-organized the Legislative Briefing on Missing Black Women and Girls with us and all who supported us in person and online. 🎤 We believe every missing person should receive the resources and attention they deserve. On Juneteenth, we commemorate the end of slavery and honor the resilience of generations who fought for freedom. However, true equity remains an ongoing journey that demands sustained effort across all sectors, including business. At the Council for Inclusive Capitalism, we stand alongside the Black community and all those facing systemic barriers. We are committed to fostering an economic system that empowers underrepresented groups and creates equitable opportunities. This Juneteenth, we highlight the "CEO Blueprint for Racial Equity," a resource by Council member PolicyLink. This vital resource guides businesses to address impacts on people of color and low-income communities across three domains: 1️⃣ Within the Company: This goes beyond just diversity and inclusion initiatives. It covers things like embedding racial equity accountability into policies, compensation, governance, conducting racial equity audits, redesigning products/services to center equitable outcomes, and operating an antiracist supply chain. 2️⃣ Within the Community: This involves authentically building trust and relationships with local communities, redesigning corporate philanthropy to address root causes of inequity, advocating for local policies that improve outcomes for communities of color, and ensuring environmental justice. 3️⃣ Within Society: This includes advocacy for national public policies that advance racial equity, making investments to promote equity, using corporate voice and communications to drive change, and joining cross-sector coalitions. We encourage leaders nationwide to continue their DEI efforts and advocate for those who continue to be left behind due to deeply ingrained racial inequities and discriminatory policies. As we observe Women’s History Month and reflect on the incredible women who have shaped our lives and communities, I am compelled to pay tribute to my grandmother, Madie Maddox Smith-Moore, on the 1-year anniversary of her passing. Her impact continues to resonate deeply within our family and beyond, inspiring us to carry forward her unwavering commitment to service and empowerment through the Madie M. Smith Women's Health Equity Institute. Nana believed fervently in the power of leadership and advocacy, especially for those facing barriers due to gender and race. Her words, immortalized in her quote, serve as a guiding light for us all: “We should always be prayerful for the courage to lead when the odds are against you only because you are a woman and the color of your skin. When we get the opportunity to lead, we should mentor and uplift others with compassion, and respect.” – Madie Maddox Smith In her honor, we remain dedicated to embodying her principles through the framework of our 6 Over-Arching Pillars: 1. We commemorate the extraordinary contributions of Dorothy Height and Ella Baker, two towering figures in the struggle against racial injustice in Wards 7 and 8. Dorothy Height, a pioneering leader and activist, served as the president of the National Council of Negro Women for over forty years. Throughout her illustrious career, Height worked tirelessly to advance the rights of African American women and to address issues such as poverty, unemployment, and voting rights. Her dedication and advocacy extended beyond Wards 7 and 8, resonating across the nation as she became a key figure in the broader civil rights movement. Ella Baker, often described as the "behind-the-scenes architect" of the Civil Rights Movement, played a pivotal role in organizing grassroots initiatives and empowering local communities. Baker's commitment to grassroots activism and community organizing was instrumental in mobilizing ordinary people to challenge segregation and demand equality. Her emphasis on decentralized leadership and grassroots participation empowered individuals in Wards 7 and 8 to take ownership of their struggle for justice, fostering a sense of collective agency and resilience. Together, Dorothy Height and Ella Baker forged alliances, built coalitions, and inspired countless individuals to join the fight against racial discrimination and economic inequality in Wards 7 and 8. Their steadfast commitment to justice and their ability to mobilize communities laid the foundation for lasting change, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of civil rights activism in the United States.
