As we enter the weekend of Veterans Day, November 11th, we pay special tribute to the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. We are grateful for your time, dedication, and sacrifice. 🇺🇸

Knowing exactly how much your work matters.
When you’ve fought in the platform you are now delivering, it tends to make your work part of your DNA. That’s why veterans like Brian Garvey transition out of the military into #LifeAtBAESystems.

Today and every day, we honor and express our gratitude to the brave people who have served our nation in the armed forces. Veterans Day is a time for us to reflect on the tremendous sacrifices made by those who have selflessly defended our freedom. #VeteransDaySherri Turpin

For some, the only day to honor our Veterans is Veterans Day. How does your community, state and federal government honor its veterans?
Educating your society about the wars it has fought is but one way. Educating the veterans themselves, providing them with adequate healthcare (including that for mental health issues like PTSD and for needed counseling to adjust to civilian life), providing them with needed technical skills, supporting their families in times of need, providing them with needed housing, and providing them with additional monetary support once they have left the service are only some ways we can honor them.

There are no words to fully capture all that goes into serving in our armed forces. But as we honor & celebrate veterans today, we’ll start with this:
Thank you for your service, your sacrifice, & all you’ve done to protect everything we hold dear.

Please watch! The messages in this video are amazing because you don't have to serve to learn these messages and you don't have to serve to implement the lessons compiled in the video into your career and the corporate world. No matter where we are it's so important to learn the ends and outs of leadership and to apply what you know to grow your team. Remembering that everyone around you needs to be encouraged and no one should be left behind. Good leaders lead from the front but great leaders constantly check on those in the rear.

🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸For those who saw my post before, last year for Veterans Day I wrote an article about some of the most important lessons I took away from my military service.
This year, I thought we’d make it a bit more special by asking some of my fellow service members what they took away from their service… and here it is!!
Thank you to everyone that helped out, and Trevor Melton for editing.
Most importantly, thank you to all those serving and who have served! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

There are too many stigmas and misconceptions that surround service life and especially towards those who've served in the front line 'teeth arms' such as the Army or the Marines. Of course you can't come back from conflict without it affecting you in some way, large or small, but that doesn't mean we should look upon Veterans as more of a risk than anyone else. Sadly for reasons more to do with the media's portrayal of Veterans I think too many recruiters overlook them unfairly. Yes I've served and yes I've served on active deployments so you may think I'm biased in some way but I also know what Veterans bring to the table! Like civilians we're all of mixed ability but given aspects of an ex service persons character should never be overlooked and employers would be foolish to do so. I look at my industry - rail. It is ideal for Veterans and it's true quite a few enter the industry. I think as an industry we can do a lot more to attract these high calibre people, from station grades all the way up to senior technical and managerial positions, after gaining the necessary grounding in the industry.
So what do Veterans bring to the table? Amongst many things it's trainability, an aptitude for quick learning, a respect for rules and regulations that are safety critical, self discipline, smart and professional appearance and bearing, excellent timekeeping, an ability to be anywhere at a given time and being able to work in unpleasant environments. On top of this many are highly experienced instructors, mentors and managers whilst others come from technical backgrounds.
In short, total professionalism and employability.
I would urge all of my network and those not currently on it to look again at your recruiting strategy, or indeed your own attitudes to ex service personnel and consider what these men and women can do for your organisation and the added value they bring.
