"BATCH DISTILLED. FROM TANQUERAY. WHO CARED?" We had to part with Bombay Sapphire. Diageo had too many gins. So the brief was to develop a new gin to occupy that space. And quickly. The answer was a new style of gin. Made from FRESH botanicals. Fresh juniper, fresh coriander, fresh lime and fresh grapefruit. And the payoff? A fresh, clean-tasting gin that might just persuade gin refuseniks. Maybe even vodka drinkers? We called it Tanqueray Ten. And the gin itself was a triumph. Still is. It came as a surprise to discover that the key legend on the launch bottle was the phrase 'BATCH DISTILLED'. Batch distilled from Tanqueray? How big was the batch? And whatever the size, what's in it for me? I've long railed against utterly meaningless phrases being put on the front of brand packaging. 'Hand crafted' is one. Who can believe that a product produced by a global corporation is made by hand? Or what does 'quadruple distilled' mean to the average consumer? It will probably research better than 'double distilled'. But does it actually mean anything? It's the argument of 'process versus benefit'. How things are made is pretty well irrelevant. What they offer is everything. A fresh botanical gin for a fresher, cleaner taste seemed pretty compelling to me. But that was all a long time ago. Even today, twenty odd years on Fresh, clean-tasting gin doesn't make the cut. This year's reason to buy Tanqueray Ten is that Stanley Tucci drinks it! PS : A story at my own expense. Years ago we developed a gin and its shtick was that it was 'Sequentially Distilled'. I got quite excited by the term. It sounded sophisticated and smart. Leaning into Bitter Aperitivo as our #WineCoFlavorOfTheMonth, we are sipping on the gently bitter and delectably delicious ROSEN BITTER (AKA Rosa Alpina) weighing in at a mere 25.4° Rosen Bitter is an alcoholic liqueur obtained from the infusion of mountain herbs and berries. The infusion takes place in dedicated recipients and last for approximately 20 days. Some essences, as for example rose or bay leaf are gained by distillation so as to achieve a deeper aromatic intensity. At the end of the process (the infusions and the distillates) are combined. The obtained blend, however, needs to rest for a good 20 days before it can be bottled. This final process is necessary in order to amalgamate all the aromas and thus obtain a bitter with an intense yet harmonious taste, particularly versatile, so as to be the perfect base for many of the most popular cocktails. The botanicals are singularly infused as soon as they are harvested, respectively in a mixture with a different alcohol content, in order to obtain the best possible aromatic result from each raw material. Once the infusion is completed, the solid remains are pressed so as to squeeze all the absorbed liquids from the spices. Consecutively, the different brews are meticulously filtered and eventually blended among each other in different ratios. The characteristic notes of this delicious admixture make for a harmonious balance among the botanicals – thus becoming “Rosen Bitter” in its most simple and delicious form.
