Meet Aliza, one of the recipients of our 2023 video contest honorable mentions who bravely stepped into the "Limelight" to share a bit of her story. Aliza shared with us, "When I graduated from college, I did not think I would get to go to graduate school. I did not know that I was autistic. I knew that I burnt out more quickly than my peers, that I have severe social anxiety, and that people tend to perceive me as odd and antisocial. When I found out I was autistic, I spent the next 3 years getting to know myself and working as a support professional for autistic people. I gained insight into how to think about disability and what my strengths are as an autistic person. I took prerequisite classes and eventually got into graduate school. Now I am in a Communication Disorders master’s program at Bridgewater State University, where I have accommodations that help me succeed. I also have job in the accommodations office where I can meet with and advocate for other disabled students. " We are so proud of Aliza and congratulate them on all the ways they are rebranding disability through achievement! 💔 Heartbreaking Rejection: A Story of Inclusion Denied 💔 Today I got to learn about a heartbreaking story from a client during consultation. A school had rejected her child with autism, simply because she was considered 'slow' and couldn't keep up with other children. I wondered how they could turn their backs on a child they could have easily supported? It's painful to think about the impact this rejection will have on her and her family. This child, who can speak and identify things through colors, deserves love, care, and the chance to learn and grow like any other child. By rejecting her, the school missed an opportunity to create an inclusive environment where all children can thrive. We need to raise awareness about the importance of inclusion and acceptance. Let's come together to support children with special needs, providing them with the education and care they deserve. Every child deserves a chance to shine, regardless of their abilities. Join me in spreading the word and advocating for inclusive education. Together, we can make a difference and create a brighter future for all children. 💙🌟 #InclusionMatters #EveryChildMatters #SpreadLoveAndAcceptance"

Did you know that almost 40% of girls are neurodivergent? Neurodiversity is the idea that we all have different brain wiring. If you don’t have a diagnosable brain-based difference, such as autism for example, you are of the “neuromajority”, or are “neurotypical”. But if 2 out of 5 girls think and experience the world differently because their brains process information differently, then we should have a way to bring understanding and acceptance to the neuromajority. Good Friend, Inc. has an online platform, Good Friend Academy, that allows any child service provider anywhere to access developmentally-specific peer education films, discussion guides, and other supplemental materials. Through a generous grant from Women and Girls Fund of Waukesha County, we are able to provide our Good Friend Academy to to a select number of Waukesha County Girl Scout Troops! Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast. 🌟If you're a Girl Scout Leader, watch for more information about bringing autism awareness, understanding and empathy to your troop! 🌟 #AutismAwareness #WaukeshaCounty #GirlScouts #Inclusion #Autism #Spectrum #GoodFriend #OnTheSpectrum #AutismInclusion #GoodFriendAcademy #MixedAbility #BetterLearning #AutismSpectrum #EarnAPatch

Let's talk about it? I pull a lot of my post from conversations I have. Yesterday while having a conversation with Cheryl Poe about the upcoming Black Collective Advocacy Network Conference, which I will be presenting at Friday, a question was asked about AT. Lets talk some history. 📜1988: Called the Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act (Tech Act) at the time it authorized grants to individual states, funding and establishing a national network of state programs for AT 📜1998: name was then changed to Assistive Technology Act (AT Act) and expanded access and funding for AT services 📜2004: Designed to maximize the ability of people (children & adults) with disabilities to select, obtain, and use assistive technology Now back to the discussion lol. It was mentioned that AT had been requested and that the schools response was we will observe and see if its necessary. So here is how I recommend addressing that: 1. Request the AT in writing and identify the need based on data already gathered. You are already observing this child and making notes and there is a reason why you think this data would be necessary, remember that! 2. Data determines everything. So if that request is denied, and again make them deny it in writing, inquire about the use of AT on a trial basis (typically 14 days) to gather data on its effectiveness 3. Remember when using AT: - All staff who work with that child should be trained on it and know what it is used for - It needs to be identified what its used for, specific subjects? specific tasks? - Lastly and most importantly it DOES NOT get withheld for punitive reasons! A need is a need! So what has been your experience with AT? What has your experience been requesting it as a parent? As a staff member? #Autism #ADHD #DevelopmentalDelay #SpeechOrLanguage #ActuallyAutistic #Audhd #AssistiveTechnology #Parent #TeamEffort #SpecialEducation #OT #PT #SLP #SchoolPsychologist #Advocate #Therapist #Neuroaffirming #Neurodivergent #IEPSupport #IEPTips

In these spaces we talk about diversity and inclusion. But does that include neurodiverse children in schools and for adults in workplaces? This never crossed my mind until about 19 months ago when this hit home. It was 19 months ago that I learnt of neurodiversity when my son was diagnosed - he is on the autism spectrum. Until then I didn’t know anything about neurodiversity and what it means to raise a child on the autism spectrum. I immediately immersed myself in research, spoke to doctors, scientists, moms raising children on the spectrum. I soon realised the world is not ready to include children who are neurodiverse in schools. My beautiful boy goes a daycare for children on the spectrum but my dream is for him to attend main stream schooling at Grade 1. How do we educate adults to be more accommodating to children who think and act differently from what they are used to? Are there spaces where these conversations are being held? Are there organisations that are making it their mission to advocate for people in the workplaces? We are starting a dialogue amongst women, I hope it transcends to places that can make some changes. The dialogue is not only about neurodiversity but for other special abilities. I focus on neurodiversity because it’s personal. What happens when we don’t understand Autistic young people? What happens when we don’t get it right? 71% of children in the Youth Justice System in England and Wales have speech, language and communication challenges. What is it that we have missed that could have prevented that over representation? Today we are joined by Keith Fraser, Chair of the Youth Justice Board for England and Wales. Keith was appointed by the UK Prime Minister as a commissioner on the UK Commission for Race and Ethnic Disparities, chairs other organisations, is a mentor, public speaker and leadership facilitator. He is driven by fairness and as he progresses on his journey to understand his own Dyslexia he wants to support other neurodivergent people to be the best version of themselves. Keith is featured in Module 14 of The Autism & Neurodiversity MasterClass. How do we create equity? By teaching those around us what it REALLY means to be Autistic. Know your rights. 40% of children in care end up in Prison too, and 30% of children in care shouldnt be in care, Josh MacAlister OBE Care Review and other reports.. What can we do better? Its over £3bn in legal fees alone to put that 30% wrongly in the care system in the 1st place? What could that money be used for? SALT programs , and prevention support? #Neurodiversity #ThinkDifferently #socialImpact
