At #EuroBrake2024, #AZTERLAN researcher Gorka Alonso has shared an alternative approach aimed at reducing #brake dust #emissions released into the atmosphere 💡 addressing the #metallurgy of brake discs 💡. The research perfomed by the #AZTERLAN team along with MAT Foundry Group Ltd investigated the effect of certain contents of aloying elements such as niobium, molybdenum and vanadium on the microstructure, mechanical properties, wear resistance and particle emissions of hypereutectic #gray #cast #irons, the material used to manufacture brake discs. ➡ Do you want to know more? https://lnkd.in/dx_sVa_Z #reThinkingMetallurgy #vehicle #environment #sustainability #foundry #castings #EuroBrake #GrayCastIron

After my blog about cement, it is time to have a look at steel. My favourite fun fact: the oldest known iron artefacts are nine tubular Egyptian beads made from meteoritic iron dated to 3200 BCE... One of my 2024 goals is to have a closer look at sustainability and do my own research into how we are trying to change the carbon footprint of the 4 most common materials in use today: steel, cement, plastic and ammonia. Part 2 of my little series reviews the impact of steel, which is responsible for another 8% of CO2 emissions. After taking a brief journey through the history of iron and steel making, I am having a look at 3 examples of companies trying to change how we produce steel: - SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall have delivered their first fossil free steel to Volvo Group to create an electric autonomous vehicle made out of green(er) steel. - H2 Green Steel has been able to get financing of €6.5B to build a large hydrogen and steel plant in Boden, Sweden. - Boston Metal and Electra are trying to re-invent steel making overall to reduce the impact of carbon emissions. James Temple (MIT Technology Review) has written 2 great articles on climate change and energy I highly recommend you read too: H2 Green Steel: https://lnkd.in/g27xXqqG Boston Metal: https://lnkd.in/gm7bYUg9 It is interesting to see that the production of "green hydrogen" and the cost of it as a key contributor to the plans to produce "green steel". Reducing the reliance on coal and coke along the way. Time is key as changes to steel production take time. In the steel sector, furnaces have a replacement requirement every 25 years. Almost equal in effort and funding to a new blast furnace. International net-zero emission goals are less than 2 investment cycles away for this industry sector. Green steel production in Sweden at scale has a goal of 2026-2030. I hope you enjoy this little excursion into a completely different area (away from AI for a minute). My next focus will be plastic. A material I have a special negative connection to as it pollutes the ocean, where I spend most of my pastime. Turns out that sea turtles for instance love to eat plastic bags, but more on that in the next blog... As always: welcome your thoughts and feedback. https://lnkd.in/g92ATUYN #sustainability #steel #greenhydrogen #greensteel #hydrogen #climatechange
The world does not run on AI (yet), it runs on steel…
