An architect known for pushing the boundaries, Philip Johnson was a force in Houston’s art and architecture scene. The same man who brought the city Rothko Chapel, Pennzoil Place, the Waterwall, and other notable structures also designed the Chapel of St. Basil, a can’t-miss-it church tucked on the edge of the University of St. Thomas (TX). The certified home parish for students of UST, the chapel spans 8,700 SF and catches the eye at every turn. Black, white, and gold are all that make up its exterior hues; sharp edges, sweeping curves, and artful carvings its only adornments. Linbeck delivered the Chapel of St. Basil alongside the design team at Merriman Holt Architects (Merriman Holt Powell Architects) in 1997. Today after nearly 30 years, the building remains a cherished Tex-ample of Houston's intrigue for the revolutionary. #Linbeck #UST #Faith #HigherEducation #Church #Chapel #Design #Construction #Architecture #Houston #Texas
In advance of preparing the final cost estimate for this project, I had the pleasure and privilege of personally meeting with Philip Johnson to review his design details and design intent. It was certainly a highlight in my career at Linbeck!
What a beautiful project!
