What do you think of this historical gem in Elgin, Illinois? We certainly think highly of it...especially since we had a part in its restoration! Historical preservation is often sought after, and for some projects it's required to preserve the character of architecturally significant buildings. While this home’s vibrant character and color was intact, the front porch had seen better days. In our design process, we referenced historical precedents in Elgin to create a design which was easily approved by the local historic preservation agency. Additionally, we had the challenge of producing construction drawings that conveyed how to build those historical details. This allowed the trades to translate drawings into a new porch, rail, spindles, and columns for this unique project! #architecture #design #historicalhome #ElginIL

Recently I gained a greater fondness for Classical architecture, it’s principles, its symmetry, its basic elements- the arch, column, pediment, entablature…. And the beautiful molding in cornices. And how satisfying and good for the spirit these forms of architecture are. It occurs to me now, that if I were ever to return to professional architecture— I would focus on Classicism. Perhaps with some modern elements added…. But overall parti, style, massing would be Classical Roman and Greek. I think a practice of Traditional Architecture which respects tradition and principles would be a Very exciting and busy practice—- and fill a huge neglected segment of building trade. It would really be a passion too. I think in a world of constant changes, re-imagining things, re-inventing the world, it is important to recognize that we have already reached the very Highest of Architectural styles. The noblest, purest, and greatest for the soul. All “modern” styles really pale in comparison to Classical Architecture. The majority of Americans feel this way!. This architectural masterpiece not only showcases exquisite craftsmanship but also embodies a tale that blurs the lines between the divine and the domain of advanced engineering. Constructed in the late 1870s, the Loretto Chapel's spiral staircase is a marvel of design, featuring two complete helixes, without a center column for support.
