"For students in particular, you need something called social infrastructure," says Rajeev Roy, Dean of Academics and Professor of Entrepreneurship at XLRI, sharing how India's cities can become more student-friendly. Four Indian cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai — have been recognised among the top 150 student-friendly cities globally in the latest QS Best Cities Rankings 2025, reports Siksha M for The Free Press Journal. Delhi and Bengaluru have climbed the ranking ladder compared to previous reports. While all four cities scored lower in desirability, they showed strong performance in employer activity, highlighting good job prospects for graduates. What steps can make India's cities more student-friendly? Share your take in the comments. #LinkedInVideo Source: The Free Press Journal: https://lnkd.in/emXVVsX7

I think when it comes to Indian cities making student-friendly, then its actually very hard to achieve, I guess. There are some points that parents are concerned about: 1. Good college in a decent city 2. Not too far 3. Do they have previous connections who can act as local guardians 4. Lower crime rate to ensure safety 5. Under the budget fees and expenses 6. Better job opportunities in the future 7. Good hostel/PG 8. Food and water Most probably this much. And students look up for: 1. Good college with their favorite stream 2. Better career opportunities 3. Again, not too far and connectivity from their home to college and way back. 4. Facilities like good hostel/PG. Most probably students in India are not from the KJo universe who can afford, please refer to the data on a nationwide level. Itna paisa kahan hain students ke paas for: 1. Decent restaurants? 2. Clubs? 3. Malls? 4. Multiplexes? You go to these expensive locations once you start earning on your own. And when you talk about social connections, its something that does not actually require this infrastructure. Most social connections actually happen where university students meet with each other if different faculties have common hostels, mess, and canteens.

I think when we talk about student friendly cities, we should talk about: 1. library culture which is getting lesser day-by-day. Construction of library and book stores, will lead to employment as well as budget friendly knowledge. 2. In addition to this, there shall be student friendly cafes. I love watching study vlogs, and mainly these vlogs are recorded in cafes and spaces where students find less stressful and more cozy environment, where they can have study session with classmates. Thus, decreasing suicide attempts. 3. Along with this, the most important thing is launching of buses especially for students. Many students travel long distance by auto or e-rickshaws, which works according to the number of passengers it can fit. They don't have any time table, and many times due to hartals, students have to suffer. Student Buses will be scheduled on time, easing problem of millions of students. I feel this will create a sound environment for students, saving their time and energy as well as providing them with lesser pressure and assuring them that they are not alone in their journey.

Here in mumbI, infrastructure adopted for students policy is very poor compared to Bengalure..Now u need to motivate students to reach the peak.when quality of education is not up to the mark, than they show poor result. They need to plan the new infrastructure, where students gain confidence, &progress in their performance will be seen.So updating the policy according to new level may find a possibility of uplifting the students career helping them in reaching their destination.

Have following for considerations:- Campus - All institutions should be having state of the art infra structure to facilitate the stay and education of the students. It should include the campus, Library , Cafeterias, Gyms , Sports infra and movement with in the campus and connectivity from campus to Railway station, Bus Stand and Air Port(24*7). - Hygiene and sanitation. - Visiting faculty to enhance the knowledge base and overall horizon of the students. Cities - Safety & Security . - Transportation - its upkeep and availability. - Provision of passes or monthly tickets to be made available at all Kiosks or normal shops in the proximity of college. - Special mobile teams of police or civil hired security for protection and safety be made in the town to look into the safety and security of students. - Up keep of the town with best of infra in proximities of education institutions. -Facilitate the reservation to all students on subsidized rates and on priorities. - Excellent medical and residential support for the students All PGS must be checked for its qualities, number of students made to share and rates charged. If all these are looked into our country will be one of the best place for education.

I agree to Mr.Rajeev Roy that we need to build a social infrastructure..so, question is what? & how?. Now answering what:- What are biggest need of students it's definitely affordable accommodation, affordable food and affordable travelling ,Able to gain skills not only career skills but also, social skills, With time to relax as nowadays competition is so high ,which proportionately suggest high anxiety...we all know recent Kota factory suicides. So,There is no doubt we need a social bonding. But,How society can contribute ? As I stressed in earlier part "affordability" Now it's society's responsibility to provide it with quality, and not looking at students as profit making machine.Recent Guidelines for private coaching institutes, Shouldn't be disobey. whatever society gives it to students, students will payback. Now, this is not time as was it,in 70's and 80's that students protest. Now students are happy and ignored there mates issues, also there issues and busy with memes and all..it fine. But, unless and until we raise our voice, speak up for rights it's nothing going to happen. So, It's a communication gap from both the ends.

Enhancing India's cities as student-friendly hubs requires a strategic focus on social infrastructure. Initiatives like improving public spaces, enhancing transportation networks, and promoting safety measures are crucial. Additionally, fostering a vibrant cultural scene and affordable housing options can significantly contribute to creating an environment conducive to learning and personal growth. Strengthening academic support services and forging stronger industry-academic partnerships further enhances job prospects for graduates. These steps not only elevate cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai in global rankings but also nurture a thriving ecosystem that empowers the next generation of leaders and innovators.

There is no limit set for the best, if parents pocket allow a student to study any part of India and the student him self set a goal to achive something rather than destroying parents money then every city will become friendly to the students. Even if a student doesn't move from remote area to cities then also they can achive their goals. That's need focus and hard work in their field.

Great insights, Rajeev! Social infrastructure is indeed crucial for fostering a supportive environment for students. To make India's cities more student-friendly, I believe we could focus on improving affordable housing options, enhancing public transportation, and creating more inclusive community spaces. Additionally, fostering partnerships between educational institutions and local businesses can provide students with practical experience and job opportunities. #StudentFriendlyCities #Education #UrbanDevelopment

'Student-friendly' is a vague term. Metro cities will always have a high cost of living. What India needs is more university towns in the vicinity of major cities. Something like Manipal, but more affordable (with the PPP model).

Exciting news for Chennai! The city is getting new co-working spaces, improved libraries, and parks, with projects worth crores announced by Minister P.K. Sekarbabu. Three multi-purpose complexes with co-working spaces will cost ₹30 crore, while ten libraries will be upgraded with ₹20 crore. Plus, a new integrated sports complex and urban design improvements are on the way. Can't wait to see these changes enhance my city.
