It seems that no matter where one goes in the world, or how far from home one is, one can take comfort in the fact that there will always be some variation or incarnation of yeasty dough cooked in a vat of boiling oil. If only this type of food was comforting to the digestive system… Oh well. In South Africa, there seem to be not one but two fatty treats to feast upon. While they both originated in Afrikaaner cuisine (according to the internet, which never lies), one has been adpoted by African township-dwellers and urban streetcorner breakfast foragers of the black middle-class due to its low cost and ease of production. So, in one corner, weighing in at…more than you should probably consume, is: VETKOEK! Affectionately and appropriately called “Fatcakes” (which is their closest english translation), these are literally balls of sweetened, yeasted dough, deep-fried on an aromatic street corner near you. In downtown Gauteng they are only available in the morning, and they are best served hot. And with napkins. And possibly a nap afterward. In the other corner, weighing slightly less, we have the deceptively more delicate-looking (and infinitely shinier, if you’re into that): KOEKSISTERS! While I like to imagine the word means “cake sisters” or “sister-cakes”, koeksister actually comes from the Dutch word koekje, which translates to “cookie”. As you can see, instead of balls of dough these are twisted ribbons of the stuff. Not only are these puppies fried in oil, but afterwards they are also basted in some type of high fructose corn syrup. These sticky sweet things are more of a tea-time treat, and more typically consumed by Afrikaaners than the aforementioned fatcakes. They are best served cold, fresh from the fridge. And again: napkins. So there you have it. Gluten cooked in fat, covered (in one case) in sugar. South Africa’s answer to Tim Hortons. The winner of this epic fatty battle, of course, depends on how you like your fried things, and what form comfort food takes for you. For me: I’m probably a lot more comfortable if I avoid them both, thanks (but damn, they taste GREAT).
