Radio Communications | Overcoming Hills with Radio Signals. One thing that two-way radio systems don't like his Hills. The reason for this is because the frequencies above 30 megahertz it's mainly Line of Sight, although there are a few conditions where occasionally there is an exception. If you've got a big hill signals are going to blocked. It's it's an issue so what can we do about it? Putting a Repeater on the top of the hill is a solution. A repeater is a device system which receives a weak signal, and retransmits it at a as a stronger signal. The latest Two Minutes of Advice from Sunwest Communications discusses cellphones and burgers! Were you impacted by the AT&T outage in February? It was really frustrating, but you know what wasn’t? Watching their #crisiscomms in action. AT&T handled it beautifully.   Wendy’s got themselves in a pickle (it’s the only food reference I can come up with) over dynamic pricing. A misconstrued statement took off like wildfire in the media. The unclear communication on their part created a communications crisis.   So why is it worth your two minutes to watch? Repeaters help solve line-of-sight problems in traditional communications. If two radios wanted to communicate with a mountain peak on the road, there would be no line of sight. One way to overcome this problem is to place a repeater (or base station) on a mountain top. A radio communicates upward with a repeater, called the uplink, and the repeater then forwards that transmission to a radio on the other side of the mountain, called the downlink.
