Climate and nature are intrinsically linked, and capital markets are quickly moving towards integrated risk assessments, action, and disclosures.
"This first cohort includes leading publicly listed companies across geographies and industry sectors representing US$4 trillion in market capitalisation; over 100 financial institutions, including some of the world’s largest asset owners and managers, representing US$14 trillion in Assets under Management (AUM) as well as banks, insurers and other leading market intermediaries such as stock exchanges and audit and accounting firms."

This is exciting news. Today, the list of inaugural TNFD adopters was unveiled, featuring 320 organisations from 46 countries who have committed to being early adopters. This diverse group represents 58 out of 77 SASB sectors.
Among them are 100+ financial institutions, including asset owners and managers with a combined AUM of $14 trillion, as well as 7 GSIBs. Notably, European-domiciled countries make up 43% of the list, emphasizing the significance of TNFD in CSRD reporting—an aspect that will be further illuminated in the upcoming TNFD-CSRD mapping report.
The momentum is clear: economic growth can and should be nature-positive. Our recent collaboration with KPMG resulted in the publication of the groundbreaking 'Nature of Finance' report, a pioneering assessment of nature-related risks and opportunities for the Irish financial sector. Published just last month, this report is one of the first of its kind globally and is essential reading for those seeking insights and a proactive approach to requirements and opportunities in this field.

👀 It's interesting to see who is on the #tnfd early adopters list 👀
When it comes to the #finance sector, some of the worlds biggest financial institutions have committed to adopting the TNFD, including Bank of America, Federated Hermes, Crédit Agricole CIB, MUFG, Rabobank, Norinchukin Bank, UBS along with 97 others. 🎉 That's great news.
What's disappointing is Australia's showing. None of Australia's big 5 banks--Westpac Group, ANZ, Commonwealth Bank, NAB, Macquarie Group-have committed to early adoption of the TNFD. 👎
👏👏👏 for Ethical Partners Funds Management and New Forests who have committed to reporting in line with the TNFD by 2024 or sooner, and Metrics Credit Partners who have committed to report by 2025. These companies are showing leadership in tackling biodiversity loss and nature destruction.
🌏 Australia's nature is like no where else on earth. 🌏 But, sadly, we are destroying it. Australia is a global deforestation hot spot, alongside places like the Amazon and the Congo, and our plants and wildlife are suffering.
More Australian companies, including financial institutions, need to commit to action to protect nature, before it's too late.

Great to start seeing a global shift in nature based solutions being driven by both public and private companies. This should help reinforce investment into global sustainable catchment/coastal management in the long term. This is encouraging responsible investment that isn’t just about profit and ultimately, incentivising this behaviour can help unlock partnership funding for multi-scale projects that deliver for the natural environment. A positive response to the climate crisis and hopefully great news for the field of natural flood management!

It's exciting to learn that, in the same event (annual meeting of the World Economic Forum), where, 4 years ago, I participated of a special closed session (Chatham House rules) for which I was invited by Andrew Mitchell to discuss with financial institutions and other important stakeholders, such as the World Business Council on Sustainable Development, about the possibility of the creation of the TNFD, this time 320 companies, financial institutions and service providers where announced as early adopters, who will be volunteers in making their disclosures according to #TNFD recommendations, launched last September. This includes 2 Brazilian financial institutions (BTG Pactual and JGP) and 4 Brazilian companies (Natura, Suzano, Vale and Telefonica Brasil). This outcome sounds not bad, isn't it? As someone who engaged with financial sector stakeholders in Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Paraguay, Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya, and later was a member of the Technical Expert Group, having participated in the development of the first technical grounds for the work that is now going deeper and deeper, I am very happy to see this result and I will work together, as the founder of Soluções Inclusivas Sustentáveis, to have this initiative spread over the market, through engagement with financial regulators and institutions in Brazil. And let's make sure that investors and lenders really use this information in decision-making, because, as we all know, the diagnostic of a situation is not enough to make it change for better. #biodiversityfinance#naturefinance

It's wonderful to see all of these commitments! Assessing and disclosing nature-related impacts, risks, dependencies, and opportunities is a key step for companies to start understanding how they can tangibly contribute to better planetary outcomes, through transforming business operations and value chains. Kudos to the great work of those behind TNFD.
