As we commemorate Juneteenth, let us heed the words of Texas Rep. Albert Ely Edwards: "Every year, we must remind successive generations that this event triggered a series of events that one by one define the challenges and responsibilities of successive generations. That’s why we need this holiday." Juneteenth stands as a beacon of freedom and justice, marking the day when all slaves were emancipated and igniting a movement towards equality and liberation. At Urban Grid, we recognize the significance of this day and stand in solidarity with the Black American community. We reaffirm our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, understanding that our journey towards a more just society requires continuous effort and unwavering support. This Juneteenth, let us honor the past struggles and sacrifices, celebrate the progress we have made, and rededicate ourselves to the ongoing fight for equality and justice. #Juneteenth #Equality #CleanEnergy

Happy Juneteenth! As with other significant events in Black history in America there are conflicting emotions around this holiday. On one hand it is a celebration of Black liberation. Our family will get together, enjoy the festivities, enjoy each other and I might even stay out for the fireworks. On the other hand as I am reflecting on this day in history, June 19th, 1865, two and a half YEARS after the Emancipation Proclamation, that we are incorrectly taught “freed the slaves,” that Black people in Galveston, TX actually got the news; there are feelings of sadness, outrage, and resolve to keep doing the work of anti-racism, equity, and inclusion. Union Army General Gordon Granger brought the news that slavery was over, had been over, along with the means of enforcement. As Frederick Douglas said “Power concedes nothing without demand...” Resist efforts to silence and change history to make people comfortable. Little progress is made in our comfort zones. The Emancipation Proclamation only applied to states that had seceded from the United States, leaving slavery untouched in the loyal border states. It also expressly exempted parts of the Confederacy (the Southern secessionist states) that had already come under Northern control. Most important, the freedom it promised depended upon Union (United States) military victory. What it did do was capture the hearts and imagination of millions of Americans and fundamentally transformed the character of the civil war. Juneteenth is a celebration of Black History, Freedom, and Culture. It represents hope for liberation, full freedom and equality for Black people. Today as we celebrate Juneteenth, commemorating this pivotal moment in American History, hopefully we will celebrate by educating ourselves, looking at ourselves, looking at the polices, laws, and ideas that continue as barriers to Freedom and ENGAGE in the work of anti-racism and allyship. #juneteenthcelebration #blackliberation #equity #antiracism #inclusion #culture #freedom #blackhistory #equality #juneteenth2024 #emancipationproclamation #allyship #inclusiveleaders

Juneteenth commemorates a pivotal moment in American history, the day where the long-awaited promise of freedom finally reached enslaved African Americans across the United States. While Juneteenth is a key celebration of liberation, it also serves as a powerful reminder and symbol of the ongoing struggle for racial equality and justice. This day invites us to engage in continuous learning to explore the rich history and culture of African Americans. It is an opportunity to celebrate and recognize the countless contributions that African Americans have made across all areas of society. We can amplify their voices by supporting African American-owned businesses, actively listening to their perspectives, and advocating for policies that promote racial justice. In the important words of Martin Luther King Jr, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Juneteenth calls upon us all to challenge the status quo in our role for dismantling racial bias and discrimination, along with fostering a more diverse and inclusive environment in our workplaces and communities. By committing to ongoing education, amplifying African American voices, and actively working towards racial justice, we can collectively build a more equitable workplace, community, and future together. #juneteenth #juneteenthcelebration

Juneteenth marks a pivotal moment in American history - the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in Texas were finally freed. While the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed over two years prior, news traveled slowly, and it wasn't until Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston with the official announcement that true freedom became a reality for all. As businesses, recognizing and honoring Juneteenth goes beyond simply acknowledging a historical event. It's a powerful opportunity to: * Reflect on our past: Acknowledging the systemic injustices of slavery and its lasting impact is crucial for moving forward with genuine understanding and empathy. * Celebrate Black achievement and culture: Juneteenth is a joyous occasion to celebrate the rich contributions of Black communities throughout history and in the present day. * Commit to building a more equitable future: Businesses have a responsibility to actively dismantle systemic barriers and create inclusive workplaces where everyone feels valued and empowered. This Juneteenth, let's go beyond performative gestures. Let's engage in meaningful conversations, support Black-owned businesses, and take concrete steps towards building a more just and equitable society for all. #Juneteenth #Freedom #Equality #Diversity #Inclusion
