#BESS | Attention all BESS investors and lenders (some boring but important news) Spacing is the most critical aspect of project design for *insurability* and lender compliant terms and pricing. U.K. gov has released a guidance document for grid-scale BESS safety. The most subjective topic of all for insurance -- separation distance between rows of units, is still unresolved. I've only Ctrl-F'd the document but still no movement on a 3ft minimum (NFP855 given everything we have seen has conducted UL9540a testing). Another claims 5ft but at 5ft access would be too narrow for maintenance (as per most integrator recommendations). All 3rd party analysis I've seen (computational fluid dynamics plus real-world measurement calibrations) suggests 8ft is adequate (yes, even in the presence of wind etc.) to prevent thermal runaway spreading throughout a site (aka cascading thermal runaway). I'll be at Energy and Storage Live if you want to discuss. (or email me on tom.harries@nardac.com) https://lnkd.in/eUqvxSY5

#ICYMI: On May 13, 2024, FERC approved a groundbreaking final rule—Order No. 1920. This rule requires public utilities to undertake new long-term regional transmission planning over a 20-year horizon and allocate the cost of selected transmission projects in a manner that corresponds to the benefits they provide. Our Linda Walsh, Sylvia Bartell, Mike Blackwell, and Corban Coffman present an overview of the rule and next steps in the FERC proceeding. #EnergyRegulation #Utilities

The crib notes: "PJM’s proposals grew out of about two years of stakeholders meetings, which were given urgency following Winter Storm Elliott in December 2022 when the grid operator narrowly avoided rolling blackouts. FERC is still reviewing the second piece of PJM’s reform plan, which centers on changes to the grid operator’s offer cap and capacity performance rules, including taking a forward looking approach for determining energy and ancillary services revenue to calculate the offer cap and minimum offer price. https://lnkd.in/ejkQwhjD

The Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme is the government’s main mechanism for supporting low carbon electricity generation. CfD’s incentivise investment in renewable energy by providing developers of projects with high upfront costs and long lifetimes with direct protection from volatile wholesale prices, and they protect consumers from paying increased support costs when electricity prices are high. The sixth round has now been announced, and will open on 27 March for the following technology groups: • Pot 1: Energy from Waste with CHP, Hydro (>5MW and <50MW), Landfill Gas, Onshore Wind (>5MW), Remote Island Wind (>5MW), Sewage Gas, and Solar Photovoltaic (PV) (>5MW). • Pot 2: Advanced Conversion Technologies (ACT), Anaerobic Digestion (AD) (>5MW), Dedicated Biomass with CHP, Floating Offshore Wind, Geothermal, Tidal Stream, Wave. • Pot 3: Offshore Wind.
