We had the opportunity to catch up with Robert Kaemba to discuss how exploration companies might work with different stakeholders.
🤝 Different jurisdictions means differences in cultures, policies and local authority guidelines. Firstly, you need to be respectful of the culture, but also understand what sort of laws and rules you need to follow.
🌐 Having a dedicated team who can take the time to truly understand the area is vital, as it may be very different to where some of the exploration team are from.
⏳ A mine might be open for 5 years, or 40 years and can therefore be a very long process. Therefore, the relationship with the local community could include employment, and/or training through local apprenticeships or scholarships.
🌱 Most important is understanding what that community really needs for the long term, however, beyond the life of the mine. If the region is rich in agriculture, then more impact might be felt through training people to be better farmers.

My thoughts on #BHPXplor
Applications close on October 11th this week!
Some quick thoughts about those of you still thinking about applying for the next round of funding for the BHP Xplor programme.
MAKE SURE YOU DO IT!!
As many of you know, Impact Minerals Limited was fortunate enough to have been selected as one of the inaugural seven companies to participate in the unique #BHPXplor exploration accelerator programme.
I have to say it was one of the most rewarding things I have undertaken in my career. It was a privilege to have been involved with an exceptional group of people, both from BHP, who put together the incredible programme (in particular The Fabulous Five, Sonia Scarselli, Charlee Johnson, Libby Sharman, Niall McCormack and Marley Palin); as well as the other members of what we came to name ourselves, the Magnificent Seven (a name a few of us came up with in the bar late one night (very late)!
The name was appropriate because the programme brought together 7 different groups of people who, despite our disparate backgrounds, all had a shared passion for exploration and discovery. That passion was matched by the passion of the Xplor team, who are really set on trying to change the way major and junior companies interact, and I have to say we did all bond during the programme and that was worth more than the funding in many ways.
So be aware that the selection process is very well thought out – they are looking for people who have the same passion, but who are also very open to being coachable and want to throw themselves into the Xplor programme.
We certainly threw ourselves into it at Impact, and it has strengthened both my own personal development with all the one-on-one coaching received, as well as the Impact team, as we have implemented many of the learnings into our culture. It has also immensely improved our stakeholder engagement. We spent every dollar they gave us on our Broken Hill project, and we will have a lot of news to come from that as we put together all the data we collected.
I like to call the Xplor program a mini-MBA in how to run a junior exploration company that has the strategies, tools, and systems to be able to speak the same language as and work alongside a major mining company. If you want a major company as a partner, you need to make it easy for them to do business with you, and so having the right processes and systems in place that reduce their risk in dealing with you upfront is one of the keys to attracting them to your company and your project.
For those of you worried about the agreement, the IP, the possible “hooks” in the deal, being treated like children, or being susceptible to “drinking the BHP Kool-Aid”, (some of the many barbs thrown in our direction!), you have no idea what you are closing your mind to.

Cadetship Programme
Sefateng Chrome Mine (SCM) with the support of the Sefateng Chrome Valley Development (SCVD) implemented a training programme for Community Youth Development. The programme is informed by the need to train communities on mining related skills to make them eligible for employment opportunities on the mines. In Sefateng’s mine operational readiness plan, the stoping crews are planned to ramp up production and therefore additional crew members will have to be employed who will then be sourced from the trained community members.
Our Cadets (community members) were trained on Competency B qualification, which is the minimum entry-level skill to work in the mines. The qualification (Comp B) is a SAQA registered qualification offered through Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) accredited training providers. Fifteen (15) community members recruited from Mampa, Ga-Phasha and Jibeng villages were trained and successfully completed this programme on 09 September 2022.

“I'll always remember that interview, (they said) have you ever heard a place called Weipa before? And I said, no, I haven’t. I had to Google it after the interview and I saw that it’s in the middle nowhere and I was like, oh wow, that looks really interesting,” Graduate Mining Engineer, Luke (pictured right) said.
“I went up to Weipa for 3 months and worked at Amrun on Wik and Wik Waya country. It was such an interesting place, best fishing I've ever experienced! I met some really great Rio Tinto employees and all the intern students I worked with were amazing. From there, I went back to study my final year of university.”
Luke is a Wiradjuri man that has recently graduated from the University of Wollongong (Dharawal) with Bachelor of Mining Engineering, and now works in the Mining Technical Services (MTS) team for our Iron Ore business.
“I'm based in Whadjuk Noongar (Perth), and I do fly in fly out. I work for MTS at Marandoo in the Pilbara (Western Australia). MTS deal with the planning of everything inside the mining pit itself. We deal with scheduling where diggers need to go, putting forward all the jobs that need to be done in the pit development wise, tracking how the pits going against what the quarterly planner has put out. Basically, another word for us is mine planners. Within that space are also geotechnical engineers, and geologists, who obviously monitor the health of the pit and also monitor the type of ore that we're pulling out of the pit.
“I definitely recommend the intern program. For me it acted like an almost try before you buy. And then that ties straight into the graduate program. The networking you get to do with all the other graduate students is amazing. I've met so many awesome people, and made so many friends, through the program. Most other places you wouldn't get the opportunity to work outside of your department so you wouldn't understand the whole supply chain.”
