2023 saw a step change in renewable capacity additions, driven by China’s solar PV market. Global annual renewable capacity additions increased by almost 50% to nearly 510 gigawatts (GW) in 2023, the fastest growth rate in the past two decades. This is the 22nd year in a row that renewable capacity additions set a new record. While the increases in renewable capacity in Europe, the United States and Brazil hit all-time highs, China’s acceleration was extraordinary. In 2023, China commissioned as much solar PV as the entire world did in 2022, while its wind additions also grew by 66% year-on-year. Another block buster year for PV installations this year. 2022 was already a big year for record installations nearing 400GW! it wasn't too long ago at 2019-2020 that total global installations past 100GW. Now with record low PV module prices as well. I expected this to be occurring in 2025-2026. But it's happening now with module prices for P-type monoPERC bifacial at $0.15-$0.16/Wp. While the International Energy Agency (IEA) still estimated with 374.9 GW of additional #solar #PV capacity in 2023, the researchers from BloombergNEF counted 444 GW new PV (DC) panel output in 2023. For 2024 additional 574 GW (DC) of module build are predicted, mainly limited by factors such as access to grid, land and labor. BloombergNEF mid-scenario forecasts new global PV installations of 627 GW in 2025 and 672 GW in 2026, and then further growth to 718 GW in 2027 and 722 GW in 2028. For 2029 and 2030, predictions are at 820 GW and 880 GW annual PV growth. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has a more conservative forecast of new PV capacity of 402 GW in 2024, 422 GW in 2025, growing to 540 GW per year in 2028 as the main case. In an accelerated case it could grow from 467 GW in 2024 to 673 GW anually per 2028. In contrary market researcher Wood Mackenzie predicts no further growth in the coming years (+350 GW/year) due to rentability concerns of new solar PV installations. There is no shortage of polysilicon, PV modul or PV panel production capacity, as current module capacity of the main suppliers mounts to 783 GW. Some are afraid of lack of module of panel production capacity in Europe for independence from China for instance, but cost advantages and excess capacity will keep prices so low (<11 US cents per watt of modules), that European production is quite unlikely. Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) Clarifies Domestic Content Requirements for Solar PV Projects, Endorses Local Manufacturing The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) has issued a clarification regarding the Domestic Content Requirement (DCR) for solar photovoltaic (PV) power projects under its various schemes and programs. According to the latest office memorandum, solar PV cells and modules that are manufactured domestically must be used in these projects. The memorandum specifically states that Thin Film Solar PV Modules produced by First Solar’s integrated factory in India (FS India Solar Ventures Private Limited) now meet the DCR criteria.
