A transformative new bridge is set to connect Memphis, TN, and West Memphis, AR, as part of America's River Crossing Project, announced by Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee on July 12. This major infrastructure development will bolster one of the nation's busiest commercial corridors. Earlier that day, the U.S. DOT announced it will allocate $393.75 million from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act for the project. Tennessee and Arkansas will each contribute about $250 million, bringing the total estimated cost to nearly $900 million. This new I-55 bridge represents the largest transportation investment in Tennessee's history and will significantly improve regional and national connectivity. It will address the critical need for more resilient infrastructure, especially after the I-40 bridge closure in 2021 highlighted vulnerabilities. Environmental studies and fieldwork are currently underway. By 2050, the new bridge is expected to support about 64,000 vehicles daily, up from the current 48,000. The US Department of Commerce and Natcast have awarded $300 million under the CHIPS and Science Act to fund three new R&D facilities: a NSTC advanced packaging piloting facility, an administrative and design facility (operational by 2025), and an EUV center (opening in 2026). These initiatives aim to solve key microelectronics challenges, accelerate innovation, and grow a skilled workforce. Exciting Developments at WestRock Company! WestRock broke ground on the new $140 million corrugated box plant in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin. This state-of-the-art “superplant” spans over 580,000 square feet and is set to open in April 2025. Their CEO, David Sewell, emphasized the strategic importance of this highly automated facility in the Midwest. This is the company’s second superplant, following the Longview, Washington facility. These plants are designed to be incredibly sustainable and efficient. The Pleasant Prairie project includes a rail spur connecting to the Union Pacific mainline, supported by $885,000 from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, which anticipates 177 new jobs and economic growth. WestRock Company Senior VP, Don Sparaco, highlighted that this plant leverages top-tier technology and talent to deliver exceptional packaging solutions and support our customers' sustainability goals.
