Let’s talk about wall blessings! 🙌 Wall blessings are a beautiful tradition at Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity. When a new home is being constructed, a special ceremony is held to bless the walls. This ceremony is the second event in the homeownership journey for partner families and takes place after the house is “dried in.” It’s a way to infuse spirituality, positive energy, good wishes, and hope into the very structure that will shelter families for years to come. Here’s what you need to know about wall blessings: Symbolic Significance: Wall blessings symbolize community, love, and support. They honor the hard work of volunteers, donors, and future homeowners. Gratitude: During the blessing, participants express gratitude for the opportunity to build their own home. It’s a moment to reflect on the impact of safe and decent affordable housing. Wishes and Prayers: Blessings often include wishes for health, happiness, and prosperity for the family who will live there. People may offer written prayers, poems, or heartfelt words. Unity: Wall blessings unite neighbors, volunteers, and community members. Being a fundraiser, to me, means embracing the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. My role at the YMCA, which I am deeply passionate about, allows me to be my authentic self, whether that means showing up to work dressed as a pirate, leading songs, or educating about safety in fun and engaging ways. However, beyond these lighter moments, the true essence of my job lies in the ability to effect positive change in the lives of children and their families. Throughout my time here, I've been moved by the resilience of families facing challenges that seem insurmountable. Our team works diligently to provide tailored support, striving to create an environment where each person feels valued and cared for, without them sensing the extent of our efforts. This focus on delivering an exceptional experience is at the heart of what we do. As we look forward to 2024, there are specific areas where funding is critically needed. I am reaching out today to ask if you or someone you know can help champion one of these causes. Your support could significantly help us bridge the funding gaps for essential services: - Providing an on-site nurse during the summer, which requires $12,000. - Hiring a seasonal behavior specialist, with a funding need of $7,800. - Employing a seasonal mental health specialist for both staff and campers, also needing $7,800. - Offering direct access to families impacted by cancer, which requires $8,000. - Supporting families navigating the foster system, needing a similar amount of $8,000. - Providing Support to (10) Title 1 schools so students can access Outdoor education, with a funding need of $7,000-10,000 - In 2023 with provided $150,000 of program adjustments, closing this gap also allows us to focus on program advancement. Articulating the 'why' behind any #candidacy is paramount. The City of #Largo #invested in me, my family, and our #neighborhood, catalyzing transformative #change. As a #lifelong #resident, I've experienced firsthand the impact of proactive community policies, particularly in #housing, #childcare and #communityengagement. My journey in Largo began at one year old, when my #family settled in the back unit of a #duplex in a challenged neighborhood. In 1996, pivotal changes occurred with the establishment of the Lake Palms #Outreach Center, a collaborative effort by the City of Largo #Recreation Department, the Largo #Police Department, and the #Juvenile #Welfare Board. This initiative provided #free #yearround services for youth under 18, offering a #safespace for #community-building, #games, #activities, #sports, #tutoring, field trips and #meals. Simultaneously, #communitypolicing initiatives fostered #trust and connection between law enforcement and residents. These efforts #revitalized our neighborhood, prompting residents to transition from #renters to #homeowners, including my own family. Inspired by dedicated #teachers, familial support, and by Largo's Outreach program, I overcame #academic #challenges to excel academically, culminating in recognition and awards by fifth grade. However, personal losses, including the passing of my grandmother and father and the impact of national tragedies like 9/11 all in 2001, underscored the #resilience and #compassion within our #community, which was #underscored to me by the #actions of those at Lake Palms Outreach Center. Despite adversities like #natural #disasters, such as #Hurricane Francis in 2004, I persevered academically, graduating with honors from Osceola High School and becoming the #first in my family to attend #university. Yet, the escalating #cost of #homeownership in Largo underscores the urgent need for #inclusive #policies that ensure #affordability and #opportunity for all residents. Today, I'm compelled to run for Largo City Commission to #uphold our community's #legacy of #inclusivity and #opportunity. While I can't recreate my #youth, I'm #committed to fostering a Largo that prioritizes #equity, #affordability, and the realization of every resident's #potential, regardless of their #background or #circumstances.
