I worked in sync for 5 years before realizing that I was missing out on major opportunities. I was getting a lot of placements on TV But I didn't know what I didn't know. Here's the thing, there many different lanes in the music licensing business. However, most of the successful people only understand the one lane that they've found success in. Ask one composer about sync and they'll talk to you about scoring films. Ask an artist about sync and they'll tell you to find a sync agent. Ask a producer and they'll tell you to seek out music libraries. Another producer might point you towards custom music houses for ads. And still another producer will tell you about their success scoring movie trailers. I was five years into the business, getting lots of placements but the only world I knew was production music for music libraries. The people I learned from - that's the world that they understood. I didn't even know that I was missing so much. It wasn't till I got hired to write songs for a TV show filming in Atlanta, that I learned about on-set music for TV shows. It was a whole new world and it made me curious about what else was out there. I later found a course on music for advertising and that path is totally different than the production music path I was familiar with. My eyes opened wider. Things really opened up once I started moderating conversations on the Clubhouse app in 2019. By interviewing dozens and dozens of composers, artists and supervisors, I got to see how everyone was making money and how they found success. There are dozens of paths in this business and they're all different. There are different rules of operation and different paths to entry. The point is, if you're learning about sync licensing from just one "expert" or from a single artist or musician, you're probably getting a narrow view. And most likely, you're missing out on other income opportunities. You might even be missing out on your true dream job. It's best to talk to as many different people as you can. And connect with people who have experience in multiple avenues in sync. The more you know, the greater your ability to choose the path that brings you the most happiness. If you follow me, I will continue to share the knowledge I find about the many ways to make income in this business of music - particularly in regards to music licensing. #synclicensing #musicbusiness #musicindustry #musicproduction #songwriting #indieartists

Why Mixing & Mastering is important ? Mixing and mastering are two distinct stages in the music production process, each with its specific objectives. Mixing focuses on the balance, placement, and processing of the individual layers of a song, while mastering refines the already mixed track, ensuring sonic consistency, clarity, and optimal playback across various platforms Mixing is when an engineer carves and balances the separate tracks in a session to sound good when played together. During mixing, an engineer will balance out the individual tracks to make a cohesive song. An audio producer will use EQ, compression, panning and reverb to reduce the incompatibility between tracks Mastering on the other hand is the process of making playback quality optimal. During mastering, an engineer balances complete songs and spectral content to make songs sound good together. Mastering also involves adding final touches like equalization (EQ), compression, limiting and stereo enhancement #mixingandmastering #indiemusic #songwriters

So how strong is the MLC’s case against Spotify? Will the MLC, working on behalf of songwriters and publishers, be able to win back the income lost to Spotify’s change? Based on MBW’s analysis of the case, we think the MLC has a solid chance of winning… in the short run. Classic paid-for PR misdirection: --In 2023 Spotify paid out less in royalties in 2023 then it did in 2022. --The average payment made per non-subscription user is a $5/year contribution to the music industry. --The non-subscriber freemium market is growing faster then the paid-subsciptions --In order to increase user numbers and shareholder value, Spotify heavily discounts subsciptions; with the average subscriber paying $55/year --Music piracy is back in vogue and near, if not surpassing past levels --Spotify paid the major labels with 3.9% of their music catalogue $4.5 Billion; the exact same they paid Independents with a 96.1% share of the music catalogue --In 2023 #DanielEk made more money then they paid Taylor Swift
For professionals at any level, watching the interview between Forbes' Steven Bertoni and Spotify's Chief Public Affairs Officer, Dustee Jenkins, is a must. Here are 5 takeaways I took from their interview: 🎵 Categorize Your Tasks Into Immediate Needs vs. Long Term Strategy - Jenkins spoke about how she compartmentalizes her tasks into those that need immediate attention and those that are more long-term. Addressing your more immediate tasks and carving out proper time and headspace for those longer-term, opportunistic tasks is a critical skill for professionals at any level to master. 🎵 When Telling A Company's Story, Never Forget Your Roots and Original Mission - Jenkins was asked how to effectively tell the story for a company as large and influential as Spotify. Her response was compelling; she always tries to revisit the company's foundational roots and the initial motivations behind its creation. For those who don't remember, Spotify was created to be a better alternative to piracy which at the time of its creation was ramped around the globe. The takeaway for marketing and communication professionals: try to anchor your storytelling in the company's original mission and the founders' vision, showcasing how these elements continue to guide and shape the company's interactions with stakeholders and its overall direction. 🎵 Lean Into The Criticism Through Transparency - Jenkins shared that ignoring criticism often leaves a void that detractors will fill, amplifying the noise. Her advice is to "lean into the punch" when facing criticism. For Spotify, this meant educating stakeholders who were critical of their model by launching a microsite called Loud & Clear, which explains in layman's terms how Spotify pays out royalties, the overall impact of the platform on the industry, and how the payouts have benefited creators globally and locally. 🎵 Highlight The Work And Explain How It Makes A Difference - Jenkins stressed the importance of illustrating the value your company’s products or services bring to stakeholders, especially in the face of criticism. At Spotify, this value extends beyond just royalty payments; it encompasses providing artists with extensive data insights. This wealth of information aids artists in refining their marketing strategies, planning tours, and even deciding on setlists. The key takeaway is to proactively showcase the tangible benefits your company offers to stakeholders, reinforcing its value proposition amid challenges.
