The Eurovision Song Contest is over for another year, but let's not overlook the vital role of music education in nurturing musical talent and shaping vibrant music industries. The success of the Swedish music industry is often attributed to a strong foundation in music education. Here in the UK recent survey data suggests that almost a quarter of secondary schools are falling short of meeting the government's expectation of an hour of classroom music each week for Key Stage 3. A Teacher Tapp survey of senior leaders in state secondary schools revealed that 16% teach music for less than an hour a week. Additionally, 2% do not offer music lessons and, 5% utilise a "carousel" system. This often results in teaching music for only part of the year. The role of music teachers has never been so important. #MusicEducation #KeyStage3 #UKSchools

Why is there such a disconnect between the formal or "traditional" music that is taught in America's colleges and universities and the pop, rock, gospel, R&B, and hip-hop music that has shaped the history, culture, and society of our country?

✏️ For September, I was proud to partner with Dr. Lauren Reynolds, Associate Professor of Music and Director of Concert Bands at the University of Delaware School of Music, to co-author this article on the important topic of empathy in our classrooms. Although the article is based on music education, its ideas could be applied to any subject area. Consider how you, as a leader, foster connections with students and colleagues, encourage peer connection, and model these behaviors. ❤️ Read the full article to guide your planning, preparation, and pride this academic year: https://lnkd.in/ei8WkZ5u

Give Your Child the Edge They Need to Secure a Music Scholarship to a Leading Private School in 10 Sessions, or Your Money Back 👇
I heard a fascinating insight from a London Symphony Orchestra member last week, and it hammered home an important truth about music: trust. 😇 Sound travels differently depending on where you are in the orchestra. 🗺️ As a member of an orchestra, you cannot hear the full sound of the orchestra as it sounds to the audience – you’ll hear those closest to you first, and those furthest away from you last. This makes it very difficult to understand how you fit into the bigger picture. 🖼 So, what do you do? 🤨 You need to dial down the trust you place in your own ears and instead trust in the ears and experience of the conductor and first violin. 👂 I think there are very few occupations that require this form of trust – where you need to partially discard one of your own senses and instead trust in the sense of another. For students applying for music scholarships to private schools, demonstrating their ability to trust and work with others is crucial to setting their scholarship application apart. So, if you have a child applying for a music scholarship, think about how they can demonstrate trust – extracurricular activities outside of music are relevant too! I see this in both my professional and personal life. Music can be the intervention that strengthens, regulates, opens up the possibility’s of empathy, a sense of community, raises self esteem and can open up emotional dialogue. In my own opinion these musical interventions should be available within SEND and main stream settings for all SEND students, including neurodivergence. An example of this is scientifically studied on the Clem Burke Drumming Project. https://lnkd.in/gimGqidp

Music ensemble playing has always been at the heart of my music education philosophy. There is something truly magical about the way we learn about ourselves as both musicians and human beings when we share, collaborate, and create with others.
