🌍 🛰 DSOC is the farthest-ever demonstration of optical communications - a way to communicate at high rates using near-infrared lasers.
Cloud occurence has a major influence on optical link availability between ground stations and senders/receivers in space. Also, sub visible clouds, aerosols and water vapor impact the transmissivity between optical ground stations and their counterpart in space, commonly LEO satellites.
🎉 NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory #MissiontoPsyche has recently achieved a milestone in Deep Space Optical Communications, sending test data successfully via the uplink and downlink near-infrared lasers between Psyche spacecraft and Caltech’s Palomar Observatory in California.
🌥 🌤 ☀ Given the variability of the cloud cover, scheduling optical link availability and selecting the right ground station from an OGS network remains a challenge. Reuniwatt's infrared sky camera Sky InSight™ is on board a number of research projects, aiming to assess the availability for optical links through the atmosphere. One of these projects is ANAtOLIA, an ESA-funded project aiming to characterize and predict critical atmospheric parameters for the purposes of the selection of the OGS sites and the evaluation of their availability. Another example is project CO-OP, a collaboration of 17 French SMEs and major groups with the goal to enable future high-speed bidirectional optical links for satellite telecommunications missions in geostationary orbit.

Remember the tech demo that launched with #MissionToPsyche? Well, it just called home.
It's the first time data has been transmitted – via laser – beyond the Moon, and it could transform how spacecraft communicate.
